Chapter 4 - ENTER THE KING

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom glided open for the second time.

The room went dead, breathless quiet.

Four broad-shouldered security enforcers in dark grey suits stepped in first, taking positions along the perimeter of the room. Behind them walked Mara Bennett, holding a sleek leather briefcase, looking like an angel of financial death.

And beside Mara walked me.

I was wearing a hand-tailored Tom Ford suit in deep navy, a silk tie, and a Patek Philippe watch that Grant Mercer had spent two years trying to get on a waiting list for. My posture was tall, commanding, and absolute.

Grant stood frozen behind the table.

Preston’s jaw hung open in absolute shock.

Claudia dropped her glass of sparkling water, the crystal shattering violently against the rug.

Sloan rose slowly from her leather chair, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table, her eyes wide with total, unadulterated horror.

“Darren...?” Sloan gasped, her voice barely a whisper. “What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security?”

I didn't answer her. I didn't even look at her.

I walked directly to the head of the table, pulling out the central executive armchair—Grant’s chair—and sat down comfortably. Mara stood precisely to my right, opening her briefcase and laying out three thick, leather-bound folders.

“Darren?!” Grant roared, recovering his voice through sheer rage. “Are you out of your mind?! You can't be in this room! We are in the middle of a major financial crisis! Get out before I have security throw you into the street!”

Mara Bennett stepped forward, her voice cutting through Grant’s roar like a razor blade.

“Mr. Mercer,” Mara said calmly. “You are speaking to Darren Keane. Founder, sole owner, and Managing Director of Keane Meridian Capital, and ultimate beneficial owner of Meridian Horizon Limited.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Grant’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head. “What... what did you just say?”

“Three years ago,” Mara continued, her tone crisp and factual, “Mercer Dominion was six weeks away from total bankruptcy due to your gross mismanagement of the freight acquisitions. Mr. Keane personally authorized a four-hundred-million-dollar anonymous credit line to save your company. He lowered your interest rates and kept you solvent.”

Sloan felt the room spin around her. Her vision blurred at the edges.

Three years ago...

She remembered the night the debt vanished. She remembered her father boasting that he had saved the family. She remembered sitting at dinner, laughing while Preston mocked Darren for being a "kept husband"... while Darren sat quietly at the end of the table, having secretly written the check that saved them all.

“You...” Sloan whispered, looking at me with wild, horrified eyes. “You owned the debt?”

May you like

I looked up, meeting her gaze for the first time since entering the room. My eyes were cold, distant, and completely stripped of affection.

“I owned the debt, Sloan,” I said softly. “And because of that debt... I own Mercer Dominion.”
