Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING ON THE BLUFFS

Eighteen months later.

The summer sun shone brilliantly over the dramatic ocean bluffs of Newport, Rhode Island.

A gentle sea breeze carried the scent of salt air and blooming hydrangea flowers across the manicured lawn of a private coastal estate.

There were no three hundred corporate guests, no camera crews, no political investors, and no strategic networking tables.

Only forty people sat in the white wooden chairs set along the cliffside lawn—close friends, trusted colleagues, and team members from Keane Meridian Capital.

I stood at the flower-draped altar wearing a lightweight cream linen suit, watching the wooden boardwalk.

Music began to play—a soft, acoustic guitar melody that echoed peacefully against the roar of the ocean waves below.

Down the aisle walked Mara.

She looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant, simple silk gown that flowed around her like liquid ivory, her dark hair woven with white orchids. She held a bouquet of wildflowers, and her face radiated an absolute, glowing happiness.

She reached the altar, setting her hand directly into mine. Her hand was warm, steady, and filled with complete, unshakeable trust.

“You look incredible,” I whispered.

“You don't look too bad yourself, Managing Director,” Mara whispered back, her eyes sparkling with laughter and tears.

The minister stepped forward, speaking simple, profound words about partnership, mutual respect, and a love built not on status or control, but on standing together as true equals through every storm.

When it came time to exchange vows, I looked directly into Mara’s eyes.

“Mara,” I said, my voice strong and clear. “You saw me when I was invisible. You stood beside me when I was betrayed. And you reminded me that real love doesn't demand a performance. I promise to respect you, honor you, and walk beside you as your equal for the rest of my days.”

Mara smiled, a single tear slipping down her cheek as she squeezed my hand.

“Darren,” Mara said, her voice filled with fierce, beautiful conviction. “I don't love you because of what you own. I love you because of who you are when nobody is watching. I am proud to be your partner, your friend, and your wife.”

We exchanged plain gold bands—simple, beautiful, and unadorned.

“By the power vested in me,” the minister announced, “I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

I pulled Mara into my arms, dipping her slightly as I kissed her under the bright summer sun, while our closest friends erupted into joyful cheers and applause.
