Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Michael walked up the grand staircase, his long strides heavy with a dark, calculating rage.

When he opened the door to the guest wing, he found Clara awake.

She was propped up against the pillows, her face still pale, but the oxygen cannula had been removed. Maria sat beside her, holding a tray of warm chicken broth, but Clara wasn't eating. Her gray eyes were frantically searching the room.

"Maya..." Clara gasped the moment she saw Michael enter. "Where is my baby?"

"She’s downstairs with Olivia," Michael said gently, walking toward the bed. "She’s fed, warm, and resting. Dr. Sterling says her lungs are clear."

Clara let out a ragged, sob of relief, her shoulders collapsing against the pillows. She covered her face with her hands, her body shaking silently.

Michael sat down in the armchair beside her bed. He motioned for Maria to leave the room, closing the door behind her.

"Clara," Michael said softly. "I know everything."

Clara stopped crying. She lowered her hands slowly, her gray eyes locking onto his with raw suspicion and fear. "What do you mean?"

"I unsealed the 2021 Aegis-9 file," Michael explained, his voice low and steady. "I know about Victor Sterling. I know about the toxicity reports. I know you didn't steal the forty million dollars."

Clara stared at him for three long seconds, as if waiting for a trap to spring. "You... you believe me?"

"I proved it," Michael said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out the red leather file Marcus had provided. He laid it on her lap. "I have the decrypted server logs. I have the paper trail linking Sterling to the offshore shell accounts."

Tears spilled over Clara’s cheeks, cutting clean tracks through her pale face. "They ruined me, Michael," she sobbed, her voice breaking into agonizing fractures. "They killed my career. They forced me into hiding. When I got pregnant last year... I couldn't go to a hospital. I couldn't get a job. Every time I tried to use my social security number, Sterling’s security people showed up."

Michael reached out, taking her cold, thin hands into his broad palms. He held them firmly, anchoring her against the storm of her trauma.

"I am sorry," Michael said, his voice thick with unbearable guilt. "I was CEO, Clara. I should have looked deeper. I should have trusted you instead of my board. I let them destroy your life."

"You didn't know," Clara whispered, looking at their joined hands. "Victor Sterling controlled the board. Your father had just died... you were overwhelmed."

"It doesn't excuse it," Michael said, his dark blue eyes hardening into pure, unyielding steel. "But I am going to fix it. Every single person who touched this... every person who drove you onto that sidewalk... is going to pay."

Clara looked at him, seeing for the first time the dangerous, terrifying power of the billionaire CEO who had earned his reputation as an unforgiving corporate titan.

"What are you going to do?" she asked softly.

Michael stood up, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his pocket. "The annual Harrison Medical Shareholders Summit is at four o'clock today at the Westin Hotel. Victor Sterling is presenting the final approval for the international distribution of Aegis-9."

A cold, ruthless smile touched Michael’s lips.

"And you, Clara," Michael added, "are going to be my key presenter."
