Chapter 6 - The Restructuring

Two months after the bankruptcy ruling, the golden lettering on the glass doors of the Michigan Avenue headquarters had been completely replaced.
BENNETT & APEX GLOBAL LOGISTICS
Inside the sprawling thirty-fourth-floor conference room, eighty senior department heads, vessel captains, and warehouse managers sat around a massive oval oak table.
I stood at the head of the table, wearing a dark gray suit, a digital presentation screen glowing behind me.
"For the past three years," I addressed the room, my voice warm and commanding, "this company was run on fear, cooked books, and corner-cutting that placed your lives and livelihoods at risk. That era ends today."
A ripple of quiet murmurs filled the room.
"Effective this morning," I continued, "every employee across all regional divisions will receive a twelve percent wage increase. All pension funds that were illegally diverted under the previous management have been fully restored using the personal asset liquidations of Richard and Mason Cole."
The room erupted into sudden, loud applause. Several older department managers, who had spent twenty years watching the Cole family strip the company bare, were visibly wiping tears from their eyes.
After the meeting concluded, my chief operations officer, David Vance—a brilliant, ethical logistics expert I had recruited from a rival firm—walked up to me with two cups of coffee.
"That was a masterclass in corporate leadership, Daniel," David smiled, handing me a cup. "The morale in the warehouses was in the gutter six weeks ago. Today, people actually want to come to work."
"Companies aren't built on executive egos, David," I said, looking out the window at the bustling harbor below. "They're built on the people who do the work."
"Speaking of executive egos," David pulled a folded newspaper from his briefcase and laid it on the table. "Did you see the morning edition?"
I looked at the headline on page four:
RICHARD COLE AND MASON COLE SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IN FEDERAL PENITENTIARY FOR WIRE FRAUD AND CONSPIRACY; VANESSA COLE RECEIVES 6 YEARS FOR FORGERY AND PERJURY.
I stared at the black-and-white photo of Vanessa being led away in iron cuffs.
There was no joy in my heart, no wild celebration. Only the deep, quiet satisfaction of a debt finally paid in full.

"Are you okay, Daniel?" David asked gently.
"I'm better than okay, David," I said, closing the paper. "I'm finally free."
