Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Prince

The cheap, humid air of a mid-tier hotel room in downtown Chicago smelled faintly of industrial cleanser and old carpet.

Grant Whitmore stood in his undershirt in front of a fogged bathroom mirror, dragging a razor across his jaw with shaking hands. The blade nicked his skin, and a thin line of red trickled down his neck.

"Dammit!" he cursed, slamming the razor into the sink.

"Oh, stop dramatic whining, Grant," Vanessa’s voice cut through from the bedroom.

She was sitting on the edge of the queen-sized bed, surrounded by four oversized Louis Vuitton suitcases that Grant’s driver had dumped on the curb outside the estate late last night. She was still wearing the red dress from the dinner, now rumpled and creased. Her flawless blonde hair was messy, and her polished composure had curdled into sharp, venomous irritation.

"My father just threw me out of my own family!" Grant yelled, walking out of the bathroom with a piece of toilet paper stuck to his neck. "He took my cards! He canceled the company credit lines! Do you have any idea what Charles Whitmore is capable of when he's angry?"

"He's an old man throwing a temper tantrum!" Vanessa snapped, standing up and crossing her arms. "He's posturing! He thinks he can scare you into crawling back on your knees and begging that pathetic, boring housewife for forgiveness. He’ll cool off by noon."

"He doesn't cool off!" Grant roared, his face turning red. "You don't know him! You thought you were so clever walking into his birthday dinner like a queen! You ruined everything, Vanessa! I told you to wait in the car!"

Vanessa walked up to him, her eyes flashing dangerously. "I brought you out of the shadows, Grant! I made you stand up! You were acting like a coward, sneaking around Lake Forest like a teenager! I gave you a spine!"

"You gave me a pink slip!" Grant reached for his phone on the nightstand. "I’m calling the office. I’m going to talk to VP Harrison. We’ll freeze the regional accounts before my dad can legal-lock them."

He dialed his personal corporate line.

It rang once. Then a automated mechanical voice cut in: “We’re sorry. The line you are trying to reach has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

Grant’s heart dropped. He quickly tapped his banking app on his phone.

Access Denied. Account Suspended by Primary Trustee.

"No, no, no..." Grant muttered, his thumb flying across the screen. He opened his personal credit card app. Balance: $0 Available. Account Closed.

"What is it?" Vanessa asked, her voice dropping into a register of genuine concern for the first time. "Grant?"

Before he could answer, his phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown local number. Grant grabbed it like a drowning man catching a rope.

"Hello? Harrison?"

"Mr. Grant Whitmore?" a cold, unfamiliar male voice spoke. "This is Arthur Vance, Senior Counsel for Whitmore Logistics Corporation."

"Arthur! Thank God," Grant breathed, leaning against the wall. "My father’s had some kind of episode. He’s locking my accounts. I need you to file an emergency board injunction—"

"Mr. Whitmore, I am calling to officially notify you that your employment with Whitmore Logistics has been terminated for cause, effective 6:00 AM today," Vance interrupted smoothly, devoid of any personal warmth. "All corporate property in your possession—including the 2026 Mercedes Maybach registered to the firm, your corporate laptops, and company access keys—must be returned to headquarters by 12:00 PM."

"You can't fire me!" Grant shrieked. "I'm the Vice President! I'm his son!"

"The Board of Directors met in an emergency session at 7:30 AM," Vance continued calmly. "The motion to terminate your officer status was passed unanimously. The board was chaired by Mr. Charles Whitmore and second-chaired by Special Advisor Olivia Whitmore."

Grant went completely still. The air left his lungs as if he’d been kicked in the chest by a horse.

"Who?" Grant whispered.

"Special Advisor Olivia Whitmore," Vance repeated clearly. "Mrs. Whitmore has been granted full executive oversight over your former division, pending a forensic audit of all regional accounts."

"Forensic audit?" Vanessa gasped, leaning close enough to hear the speakerphone. "They can't audit those accounts!"

"Mr. Whitmore," Vance concluded, "if you step foot on any Whitmore Logistics property without an explicit written invitation from the Board, security will have you arrested for criminal trespass. Have a good day."

The call disconnected.

Grant let his arm drop to his side. His phone slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the thin hotel carpet.

"Olivia?" Grant muttered, his eyes vacant, full of sheer disbelief. "She... she was at the meeting? She doesn't even know how to open an Excel spreadsheet..."

"She's doing this to hurt you!" Vanessa screamed, grabbing Grant by his shoulders and shaking him. "She's using your father to destroy us! Grant, listen to me! You have personal funds, right? The offshore account in the Caymans you told me about last month?"

Grant looked at her, his expression twisting into a pathetic, desperate mask. "I... I needed a second signature for withdrawals over fifty thousand on that account."

Vanessa froze. "Whose signature?"

"Olivia's," Grant squeaked. "My dad made her the co-trustee when we got married."

Vanessa stepped back as if Grant had suddenly sprouted a contagious disease. The cruel, glittering affection in her eyes died instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating disgust.

"You idiot," Vanessa said softly. "You absolute, pathetic idiot."

"Vanessa, wait—" Grant reached for her.

"Don't touch me!" she snapped, slapping his hand away. She grabbed her leather purse from the desk and threw her jacket over her arm. "You told me you ran that company! You told me your father was just a figurehead! You're nothing! You're just a pampered boy living on his wife's allowance!"

"Vanessa, please! We can fix this! I still have contacts in Dallas—"

"Call me when you have a credit card that works," Vanessa said coldly, her heels clicking angrily as she yanked open the hotel door, walked out, and slammed it behind her, leaving Grant standing in his cheap room, bleeding from his jaw, completely alone.
