Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

By Friday evening, the trap that Sterling Freight and Vanessa Reed had set for Whitmore Logistics had turned into a catastrophic trap for themselves.

Olivia’s rerouting strategy worked with flawless precision. Every single General Motors shipment arrived three hours ahead of schedule via the secondary rail corridors. The wildcat strike collapsed within twelve hours as independent drivers swarmed to claim Whitmore’s high-paying spot-bonuses.

Worse for Sterling Freight, Olivia’s secret acquisition of their Texas fuel supplier forced Sterling into a crushing liquidity crisis. Faced with skyrocketing fuel costs and unpaid union bribes, Sterling’s stock plummeted fifteen percent in a single afternoon.

At 7:00 PM, inside the high-end private dining room of the Pump Room in downtown Chicago, Marcus Sterling and Vanessa Reed sat waiting for what they believed was going to be a buyout negotiation.

Vanessa wore a sleek emerald dress, sipping champagne, expecting to watch Whitmore Logistics beg for mercy.

The double doors opened.

Charles Whitmore walked in. But he did not sit at the negotiation table. He walked to the corner of the room, pulled out a chair, and sat down quietly, folding his hands over his silver walking stick.

Following behind him were four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by two federal prosecutors.

And walking right beside them was Olivia.

Vanessa’s champagne glass froze halfway to her lips. Marcus Sterling stood up, his face turning pale.

"What is the meaning of this?" Marcus demanded. "This was supposed to be a private corporate acquisition discussion!"

Olivia walked to the head of the long table, setting a thick, red-bound legal dossier onto the white linen tablecloth.

"Mr. Sterling," Olivia said smoothly. "Miss Reed. This isn't an acquisition discussion. This is a federal indictment service."

Vanessa dropped her glass. It shattered against the floor, spilling sparkling wine across the carpet. "Indictment? For what? Corporate competition isn't illegal!"

"Corporate competition isn't," Olivia agreed pleasantly. "But corporate espionage, economic sabotage, and the interstate bribery of labor union officials using stolen proprietary data certainly is."

One of the FBI agents stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Vanessa Reed," the agent announced. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage under the Economic Espionage Act of 1996, grand larceny, and computer fraud."

"No!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the curtained windows. "I didn't steal anything! Grant gave me those files! He was the Vice President!"

"Grant Whitmore did not have the authority to transfer proprietary operational data to an unvetted third party," Olivia noted coldly. "And secondary server logs prove you accessed those files three days after your security clearance was revoked."

Vanessa looked wildly at Marcus Sterling. "Marcus! Do something! Call your lawyers!"

Marcus looked at her with utter coldness, stepping two feet away from her. "I don't know this woman. She approached my firm with unsolicited market research. Sterling Freight has no official connection to her actions."

Vanessa gasped, her eyes wide with betrayal. "You liar! You paid my hotel bills! You promised me five percent equity in the buyout!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Miss Reed," the FBI agent said, stepping up, catching her arms behind her back, and clicking the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Vanessa thrashing wildly, her polished blonde hair coming undone, her emerald dress disheveled as she was dragged toward the door. As she passed Olivia, she stopped, her face contorted in raw, venomous hatred.

"You pathetic little bitch!" Vanessa spat, tears of rage ruining her makeup. "You think you've won? You're still nothing! You're just Charles Whitmore's errand girl!"

Olivia didn't flinch. She stepped closer to Vanessa, looking down into her panicked, ruined face with a quiet, terrifying calm.

"Three weeks ago," Olivia whispered so only Vanessa could hear, "you walked into my home and called me worthless. You said pretty things sit on shelves."

Olivia tilted her head, her voice as smooth and lethal as silk.

"The shelf is empty, Vanessa. And you're going to prison."

The agents yanked Vanessa out of the room, her hysterical screams echoing down the marble hallway until the double doors swung shut.

Marcus Sterling sat down heavily in his chair, staring at the table, knowing his company would be bankrupt by Monday morning.

Charles Whitmore stood up from his chair in the corner, leaning on his stick, looking at Olivia with a deep, silent pride that radiated through the quiet room.

"Come, Olivia," Charles said softly. "Let's go home. We have a victory dinner to eat."
