Chapter 5 - The Federal Net

The lawn of Blackridge Estate had been transformed into a massive federal staging area. Blinding floodlights illuminated the marble facade of the mansion, casting harsh shadows across the long manicured driveway. Over twenty law enforcement vehicles—a mix of Virginia State Police cruisers, FBI SWAT armors, and Federal Marshal units—blocked every single exit point.

I carried Emily down the sweeping marble steps where, four hours earlier, Malcolm Harrow had mocked me.

A team of federal paramedics rushed forward with a gurney. I carefully set Emily down, staying right by her side, holding her hand tightly while a female paramedic began examining her injuries and wrapping her shivering shoulders in a thick thermal blanket.

"Colonel Vance!" a loud voice called out.

Major General Arthur Vance walked across the lawn toward us, flanked by a tall, sharp-looking man in an expensive dark suit carrying a federal badge—Special Agent in Charge David Ross of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

"Sarah," General Vance said, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Are you okay? Is Emily safe?"

"She’s alive, Arthur," I said, my voice trembling slightly as the adrenaline began to bleed out of my system. "She’s sustained multiple blunt force traumas and soft tissue injuries. She needs a full forensic medical exam."

Agent Ross stepped forward, looking at the tactical video feed playing on a tablet held by one of his agents.

"Colonel," Ross said, his eyes filled with immense respect. "The satellite audio and video stream you provided from that bedroom was more than enough to secure a emergency federal warrant signed directly by a Chief District Judge. We have full authorization to secure the entire property, seize all electronic devices, and place Preston Harrow, Celeste Harrow, and Senator Malcolm Harrow under federal arrest."

As if on cue, the front double doors of the mansion were pushed open.

FBI SWAT officers led Preston Harrow out in handcuffs. His broken nose was wrapped in bloody gauze, his head hanging low as he groaned in pain. Behind him came Celeste, weeping bitterly as an agent held her wrists behind her back, and finally Senator Malcolm Harrow, his head held high in stubborn defiance despite the steel cuffs locking his wrists.

As Malcolm was escorted past the gurney where Emily and I stood, he stopped, glaring at me through narrowed eyes.

"You think this is a victory, Colonel?" Malcolm sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "I have connections in the Senate, in the Department of Justice, and in every major media network in this country. My legal defense team will have these charges dismissed before the sun comes up tomorrow. You will be stripped of your rank and court-martialed for illegal surveillance and military interference in domestic affairs!"

Before I could answer, Agent Ross stepped between us, pulling a crisp sheet of legal paper from his coat pocket.

"You won't be calling your Senate connections tonight, Mr. Harrow," Ross declared smoothly.

Malcolm frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Five minutes ago," Ross explained, "while my agents were securing your executive study upstairs, we seized an open laptop connected to an encrypted offshore bank server in Zurich. We caught your chief of staff in the act of transferring twenty-four million dollars from a foreign defense contractor directly into your personal shell company."

Malcolm’s breath caught in his throat.

"This is no longer just a state domestic assault case, Malcolm," Ross continued, a lethal smile touching his lips. "You are being charged with Federal Wire Fraud, Treason, Illegal Espionage, and Grand Corruption under the RICO Act. Your assets are frozen nationwide. Your legal defense team won't even be able to collect a retainer from your bank accounts."

Malcolm’s arrogant posture completely collapsed. His knees buckled, and two FBI agents had to catch him under his arms to keep him from dropping to the wet pavement.

They dragged him away toward a black federal transport van, his desperate protests drowning in the loud, rhythmic thrumming of the helicopter blades above.

I turned back to Emily. She looked up at me, a soft, tearful smile breaking through the dark bruises on her face. She reached out and squeezed my hand with all the strength she had left.

"Thank you, Mom," she whispered.

"We’re just getting started, baby," I whispered back, kissing her hand. "Now we take back your life."
