Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Meeting

Room 314 at the Meridian Hotel smelled of stale carpet cleaner and cheap air conditioning. Ryan Montgomery sat on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed, his expensive suit jacket thrown into the corner, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal sweaty, trembling forearms.

The door to the room slammed open with a violence that made the cheap drywall shudder. Brandon entered first, his face mottled with rage, followed closely by Patricia, who looked aged by ten years, her designer elegance completely stripped away by the harsh fluorescent light of the motel corridor.

“You absolute idiot!” Brandon roared, lunging across the small room and grabbing Ryan by the collar of his shirt, lifting him off the bed. “The bank froze my warehouse accounts an hour ago! They said the property is being seized as part of a default judgment on a loan I never signed!”

“Let go of me!” Ryan choked out, trying to push his brother away, his previous charm completely replaced by the panicked whimpering of a cornered animal. “I had to do it, Brandon! The guys in Jersey... they were going to break my legs! I thought I could get the Westport house shares before the divorce cleared! I thought Madison would settle!”

“You used my name!” Vanessa shrieked from the doorway, her phone finally put away, her face swollen from crying. “I have federal investigators calling my manager, Ryan! They think I was part of a tax shelter scheme!”

Patricia stood in the center of the room, her luxury handbag clutched to her chest like a shield against the cheap reality around her. She looked at her favorite son—the boy she had praised, the man she had constantly compared to his father—and saw only a ruinous thief.

“Where is the money, Ryan?” Patricia asked, her voice dangerously quiet, trembling with an icy rage. “The foundation account... the three million dollars for the St. Jude endowment. Where is it?”

Ryan dropped his head, his tears falling onto the stained hotel sheets. “It’s gone, Mom. I lost the final block on the European market play last month. I was trying to double it so I could pay back the New Jersey guys before the annual audit.”

Brandon threw Ryan back onto the bed with a disgust so profound it left the room completely silent for five seconds. “We are ruined. Everything Dad left us... the townhouses, the commercial accounts, the name... you threw it into a garbage disposal.”

“We still have the appeal,” Patricia said, her voice rising in a desperate, delusional pitch. “Madison’s house... if we can prove Ryan contributed to the renovations or the landscaping during the marriage, the court must grant us a percentage of the equity! We can use that to pay the lenders!”

“There are no contributions, Mother,” Vanessa said, her voice hollow and dead. “Look at the news.”

She held out her phone, displaying a local business headline that had just been posted by the Greenwich Sentinel.

GREENWICH SENTINEL EXCLUSIVE: Montgomery Family Fortune Revealed as Shell Game; Federal Subpoenas Issued for Forgery and Non-Profit Fraud Following Explosive Divorce Disclosures.

“Madison didn't just walk away with her house,” Vanessa whispered, looking at her brother with absolute hatred. “She gave the entire paper trail to the federal prosecutor. They aren't just taking the penthouse, Mom. They’re coming here.”

Before Brandon could speak, a heavy, authoritative knock rattled the hotel door.

“Federal Marshals!” a voice boomed from the hallway. “Open the door immediately!”

Ryan scrambled backward toward the window, his eyes wide with a terror that no amount of family prestige could save him from. Brandon simply stood there, his arms dropping to his sides, while Patricia slowly sank onto the single wooden chair in the corner of the room, her grand illusion finally shattering into dust.
