Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Julian jumped back as if he had been struck by lightning, his hand snapping behind his back, his amber vial disappearing into his coat pocket.

"Elena!" he gasped, his heart hammering against his ribs so hard I could see his chest moving beneath his damp shirt. "You scared me! I... I was just checking her monitor."

I stepped around the bed, putting myself directly between him and Chloe.

"What’s in your pocket, Julian?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

"Nothing," he lied smoothly, recovering his composure with terrifying speed. "It’s just my allergy medication. I was taking a pill."

"Show it to me," I demanded, holding out my open palm.

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dark, dangerous slits. The slick, charming real-estate investor vanished entirely, replaced by the predator that had been lurking beneath his expensive suits for fifteen years.

"Don't do this, Elena," he warned, his voice dropping into a low growl. "You're stressed. You haven't slept. You're losing your mind over a routine medical scare."

"The doctor found Chlormezanone in her blood, Julian," I said, staring straight into his cold eyes.

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush a building.

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't look surprised. His jaw simply tightened, his eyes flashing with a dark, calculating intelligence.

"Chlormezanone?" he repeated, his tone completely flat. "I have no idea what that is."

"You made her protein shakes every morning," I said, stepping closer to him, my voice rising with absolute certainty. "You brought her warm milk every night. She started getting sick six weeks ago—right after you took out that three-million-dollar umbrella life insurance policy on her through your holding company!"

The moment the words left my mouth, the final piece of the puzzle snapped into place with terrifying clarity.

Three months ago, Julian had asked me to sign a stack of corporate estate documents. He had told me it was standard trust paperwork to secure Chloe’s inheritance. I had trusted him. I had signed where he pointed.

He hadn't been trying to secure her future. He had been preparing to collect on her death.

"You monster," I gasped, the sheer weight of his cruelty making me choke. "You weren't trying to save money on doctors. You were keeping her away from hospitals so she would die of an 'undiagnosed abdominal complication' before anyone could find the poison!"

Julian stared at me for three long seconds.

Then, slowly, a cold, sickening smile spread across his face.

"You always were smarter than you let on, Elena," Julian whispered, leaning down so close I could smell the stale coffee and rain on his breath. "A school counselor with a big, bleeding heart. But you don't have proof of anything. A blood test shows a chemical. It doesn't show who put it there."

"The hospital called the State Bureau of Investigation," I said. "They’re on their way right now."

Julian’s smile instantly vanished. A look of pure, unadulterated panic flashed across his eyes.

He reached into his coat, grabbing my wrist with a crushing grip, pulling me toward him. "Cancel the report. Tell them you made a mistake. Tell them she took an old prescription from the cabinet."

"Let go of me!" I screamed, pulling against his grip.

"If I go down, Elena," Julian hissed, his fingers digging into my skin like iron claws, "I am taking everything with me! The house, the money, your reputation, your job! I will hire the best legal team in the country and convince a judge that you were the one who poisoned her out of postpartum psychosis!"

"Get your hands off her!" a voice roared from the doorway.

Two tall, armed hospital security officers burst through the curtain, followed immediately by Dr. Mercer and two plainclothes detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

"Julian Vance!" Detective Ramirez called out, his hand resting on his holstered firearm. "Step away from your wife! Put your hands where we can see them!"
