Chapter 8 - The Warrant

Julian let go of my wrist so fast it felt like a snap.

He raised his hands high into the air, stepping back against the wall, his smooth salesman smile flashing back onto his face like a light switch being flicked.

"Officers, thank God you're here," Julian said smoothly, his voice instantly dropping into an agreeable, cooperative pitch. "My wife is having a severe psychological breakdown. She’s making completely wild allegations against me because she’s overwhelmed by our daughter’s diagnosis."

Detective Ramirez didn't buy it for a single second. He walked straight up to Julian, pulling a folded paper from his jacket.

"Julian Vance, we have an emergency search warrant issued by the Mecklenburg County Superior Court for your person, your vehicle, and your residence at 1422 Elmwood Drive," Ramirez stated coldly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"On what grounds?!" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with rising anger. "I am a respected business owner in this city! You can't do this!"

"On the grounds of attempted murder, child endangerment, and insurance fraud," Ramirez replied calmly, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists with a sharp CLICK.

Julian struggled against the cuffs, his face flushing dark red as the officers forced his arms down behind his waist. He glared at me over his shoulder, his eyes burning with pure hatred.

"You'll regret this, Elena!" Julian shouted as the detectives dragged him down the hallway past staring nurses and patients. "You won't have a dime left when I'm done with you! You hear me?! Not a single dime!"

I stood in the center of the room, my body shaking so violently I had to grab the edge of Chloe's bed to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

Dr. Mercer stepped up beside me, placing a warm, supportive arm around my shoulders. "He’s gone, Elena. He can't touch her anymore."

"Is she safe?" I sobbed, looking down at Chloe, who was beginning to stir from her sleep, her eyelids fluttering open.

"She’s safe," Dr. Mercer assured me softly. "And we are operating in three hours. The surgical team is fully briefed, and I’ve assigned a police officer to guard this door until she’s out of recovery."

I sat down on the edge of Chloe’s bed, taking her small hand in mine.

Chloe opened her eyes, looking around the room in confusion. "Mom? Where’s Dad? What happened?"

Tears flooded my eyes, but for the first time in three months, I felt a deep, unwavering sense of peace. The monster was out of the house. The truth was out in the light.

"Dad had to leave, sweetie," I whispered, pressing a tender kiss against her knuckles. "It’s just you and me now. And everything is going to be okay."
