Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Monday morning arrived with a blinding glare of summer sunlight reflecting off the glass skyscrapers of downtown Columbus.

I was sitting across the polished conference table in Marcus and Jessica’s corporate office suite on the thirty-second floor of the Sterling Tower. Accompanying me were David, Marcus Thorne, and two armed court bailiffs who stood quietly by the glass double doors.

Jessica and Marcus sat across the table. They looked confident, smug even, dressed in their finest executive attire, clearly believing they still held all the cards.

"Harrison, darling, dragging us down here on a Monday morning for a messy family chat is terribly unprofessional," Jessica chuckled, crossing her legs. "Have you come to apologize for your little caveman tantrum on Saturday?"

Marcus smirked, leaning back in his executive leather chair. "Look, Harrison, we're reasonable people. We know you're stressed about the firm's finances. Sign over the remaining equity of Vance & Associates to us as a restructuring fee, agree to amicable shared custody with Meredith, and we might forget you threw a punch at me."

I didn't blink. I reached into my leather portfolio, pulled out a thick stack of legal documents, and slid them across the marble table directly in front of Marcus.

"What is this?" Marcus asked, picking up the top page.

"That," David answered smoothly, "is a federal indictment for wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement totaling eight hundred and forty thousand dollars, signed off by the State Prosecutor twenty minutes ago."

Jessica’s smile instantly vanished. She snatched a page from her husband's hands, her eyes scanning the legal jargon. "This... this is absurd! You can't prove—"

"We can," Sarah Lin interrupted, placing a sleek tablet on the table displaying a complete, unalterable digital forensic map of every IP address, bank routing number, and forged signature key used in the transfers. "Every penny routed to your offshore accounts in the Caymans has been traced back to your personal social security numbers, Jessica. The FBI’s financial crimes division has already frozen your personal bank accounts and seized your residential property as collateral."

Marcus stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "You’re bluffing! You can't do this—we're family!"

"You abused my eight-year-old daughter," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. I stood up slowly, leaning over the table so Marcus had to look me directly in the eyes. "And you tried to steal everything I built to cover your own financial incompetence. Family ended the second you laid a hand on Chloe."

At that exact moment, the glass doors opened wider, and two federal marshals stepped inside, handcuffs dangling from their belts.

"Marcus Sterling, Jessica Sterling," the lead marshal stated coldly. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud and corporate embezzlement. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

May you like

Jessica let out a shrill scream, bursting into hysterical tears as the cold steel clicked around her wrists. Marcus stood frozen, his face turning a sickly shade of ash as he was pushed down against the table and cuffed.

As they were led out in handcuffs past the baffled employees in the hallway, I felt a heavy, suffocating weight lift off my chest for the first time in four months.
