Chapter 7 - The Final Accounting

The fallout was swift and absolute.
Meredith was arrested later that afternoon at our home. She didn't fight back, offer excuses, or beg for forgiveness. She simply packed a single suitcase while the officers waited, her head bowed in silent, defeated shame as she was led away to the county detention center to await trial alongside her sister and brother-in-law.
By the end of the week, the courts had granted me sole, unencumbered custody of Chloe.
We spent Saturday morning packing up the guest room and clearing out the reminders of a marriage built on deceit. Chloe helped me paint her bedroom a bright, cheerful sky blue, replacing the heavy floral wallpaper that she whispered "always looked like a cage."
We sat on the freshly painted floor eating pizza out of the box, surrounded by drop cloths and paint cans.
"Dad?" Chloe asked, looking up at me with a small, hesitant smile.
"Yeah, kiddo?"
"Are we going to be okay now?"
I set my slice down, pulled her into my lap, and wrapped my arms tightly around her—careful, gentle, and protective.

"We are more than okay, Chloe," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Nobody will ever hurt you again. I promise you that."
She rested her head against my chest, letting out a deep sigh of relief that told me the ghost of the past few months was finally fading away.
