Chapter 5 - The Family Tribunal

By Wednesday afternoon, news of Lorraine’s arrest had sent shockwaves through our extended family.

My family didn't react with outrage against Lorraine. They reacted with terror that the "family name" would be dragged through the local news.

At 2:00 PM, my uncle Richard—my mother’s older brother, who controlled the family’s real estate trust—called a mandatory meeting at his office in downtown Columbus.

Aunt Karen drove Emma to a local play center, while I walked into the twelfth-floor conference room of Richard’s firm.

My mother was already sitting at the table, her eyes red from crying. Uncle Richard sat at the head of the mahogany table, holding a thick file. Beside him sat Lorraine’s private defense attorney—a high-priced lawyer named Arthur Vance (no relation to us, but a man known for getting suburban white-collar offenders off with slap-on-the-wrist probation).

"Clara," Uncle Richard said, gesturing to a leather chair across from him. "Sit down."

I didn't sit down. I stayed standing near the glass doors, holding my handbag.

"I’m not here for a family meeting, Uncle Richard," I said. "If this is about Lorraine’s criminal case, her attorney should be speaking to the District Attorney, not me."

Arthur Vance, the attorney, stood up, smoothing his expensive suit jacket. "Ms. Vance, let’s speak like rational adults. Your sister is facing a Class 4 felony charge of Child Endangerment and Assault. A conviction will ruin her career on the school board, strip her of her professional licenses, and potentially result in active jail time."

"She hit my five-year-old child," I said.

"It was a momentary lapse in judgment under extreme emotional stress!" my mother blurted out, dabbing her eyes with a tissue. "Emma was screaming! The vase broke! Lorraine just lost control for one second!"

"One second is all it takes to break a child's trust forever, Mom," I replied, looking directly at her.

"Ms. Vance," Uncle Richard interrupted, his tone turning cold and transactional. "You rely on the family trust for Emma’s private health insurance and her future college fund. If you proceed with these charges and testify against Lorraine at the grand jury hearing next week, I will exercise my legal authority as trustee to terminate all financial disbursements to you and Emma immediately."

I looked at my uncle—a man worth millions, using my daughter's college fund as leverage to protect a child abuser.

I pulled a small recorder from my coat pocket and held it up.

"Thank you, Uncle Richard," I said smoothly. "That was a textbook definition of witness tampering and extortion under Ohio Revised Code Section 2921.05."

Uncle Richard’s face went entirely white.

"Are you recording this?!" the attorney shouted, reaching for my hand.

"This meeting is over," I said, stepping back toward the glass doors. "And if anyone in this room contacts me or my daughter again before the grand jury hearing, I will add witness intimidation charges to Lorraine’s indictment."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the conference room, leaving the powerful Donovan-Vance family sitting in absolute silence.
