Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Golden Child

The news of Lorraine’s multi-count felony indictment hit the local newspapers the next morning.
The headline on the front page of the Columbus Dispatch read: “Local School Board Trustee Indicted on Child Abuse and $120,000 Charity Embezzlement Charges.”
The image on the cover was Lorraine’s mugshot—her hair messy, her eyes wide with shock, her golden-child status shattered into a million unfixable pieces.
My mother called my house forty times that day. I didn't answer a single call.
At 4:00 PM, a knock came at my door.
I opened it to find Mark—my ex-husband—standing on the porch. But he wasn't yelling. He wasn't waving his hands. He was holding a formal legal document signed by his attorney.
"Clara," Mark said, his voice quiet, humbled, and completely defeated. "I... I read the newspaper this morning."
"And?" I asked, standing in the doorway.
"I’m dropping the custody petition," Mark said, handing me the signed withdrawal papers. "I was wrong, Clara. I let your sister and your mother manipulate me for years. I thought Lorraine was looking out for Emma... I had no idea she was capable of that kind of cruelty."
I took the document, scanning his signature at the bottom.
"You let them convince you that your own daughter was a liar, Mark," I said softly. "You almost helped them cover up her abuse."
"I know," Mark lowered his head, tears filling his eyes."I will never forgive myself for that. I don't expect you to forgive me either. I just want Emma to be safe."

"She is safe, Mark," I said. "Because I will never let any of you hurt her again."
I closed the door, turning the deadbolt firmly into place.
