Chapter 6 - THE CRIMINAL INDICTMENTS

The fallout from the town hall ambush was immediate, catastrophic, and unstoppable.
By Friday morning, the video of the town hall confrontation had gone viral across national news networks. Millions of people watched the video of Superintendent Hayes's incriminating email displayed on the auditorium screen.
At 10:00 A.M., state law enforcement officers and investigators from the State Attorney General’s Division of Public Integrity raided the Oakridge School District administrative offices.
Armed with search warrants, state troopers cordoned off the building, seizing server hard drives, filing cabinets, and financial ledgers.
While Lily sat on our living room couch playing with her watercolor paints—her health fully restored—David and I sat in Attorney Thomas Vance’s office, watching a live press conference held by State Attorney General Clara Mercer on television.
Attorney General Mercer stood behind a podium surrounded by microphones.
"Good morning," AG Mercer announced sternly. "Following an extensive preliminary review of evidence submitted by private citizens and medical whistleblowers, the State of Illinois has officially filed criminal indictments against four individuals associated with the Oakridge School District."
I squeezed David’s hand tightly, holding my breath.
"Mrs. Evelyn Collins has been arrested and charged with five felony counts of Child Endangerment, three counts of Reckless Conduct, and one count of Deprivation of Medical Care to a Minor," AG Mercer declared.
"Yes!" David yelled, pumping his fist in the air.
"Furthermore," AG Mercer continued, "former Superintendent Robert Hayes and Principal William Vance have been arrested and charged with Conspiracy to Conceal a Felony, Tampering with Public Records, and Official Misconduct. Finally, Mr. Richard Collins has been indicted for Financial Extortion and Fraud regarding the manipulation of school district tax audits."
Attorney Thomas Vance turned off the television screen, offering us a deep, satisfied smile.
"Criminal accountability is secured," Thomas said. "Now, Sarah... it’s time for civil justice."
"What’s the next step, Thomas?" I asked.
"The school board, terrified of total financial ruin, has officially fired their legal team and contacted my office requesting an immediate, private settlement conference," Thomas revealed. "They want to avoid a public civil trial at all costs."
"What are we asking for?" David asked.

Thomas pulled out a thick document. "We aren't just asking for money, David. We are asking for complete systemic reform. A total overhaul of district medical protocols, mandatory nurse presence in every building, immediate expulsion of all corrupt board members, and a $10 million settlement to fund a lifelong medical and psychological trust for Lily and the other affected children."
I looked at the document, feeling a profound sense of empowerment. My daughter’s collapse had been meant to break us. Instead, it was going to save thousands of children across the entire state.
