Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL OF EVELYN COLLINS

Six months later.
While the civil reforms swept through the school district, the criminal trial of Evelyn Collins reached its dramatic conclusion at the County Criminal Courts Building.
Evelyn Collins sat at the defense table wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her posture slouched in total, defeated ruin. Without her husband’s financial influence or her brother-in-law’s administrative protection, she stood exposed before the law.
I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside David, Marcus, Laura, and Dr. Elena Aris.
The presiding judge, the Honorable Marcus Sterling, cleared his throat and looked down at his sentencing documents.
"Mrs. Evelyn Collins," Judge Sterling spoke, his voice echoing through the silent, packed courtroom. "You were entrusted with the care, education, and physical safety of young children. Instead, you utilized your position of authority to inflict cruelty, withhold life-saving medication, and terrorize vulnerable students under a delusion of disciplinary control."
Evelyn kept her head lowered, saying nothing.
"Your actions on the day seven-year-old Lily Carter collapsed were not merely negligent," Judge Sterling declared sternly. "They were barbaric, callous, and demonstrated a profound lack of basic human empathy."
Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing BOOM.
"It is the sentence of this court," Judge Sterling announced, "that you be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections to serve a term of eight years in state prison, with zero eligibility for early parole. Furthermore, you are permanently barred from holding any teaching, educational, or childcare license in this state for the remainder of your life."
Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, weeping bitterly as two bailiffs clicked steel handcuffs around her wrists and led her out through the side holding door.
Former Superintendent Hayes and Principal Vance received three years and two years in prison respectively for their roles in the cover-up, ending their careers in public education forever.

As the heavy courtroom doors closed behind them, David pulled me into a tight, emotional embrace.
The dark chapter was officially closed. The monsters were behind bars, and the children were finally, permanently safe.
