Chapter 3 - The Broken Mirror

The following Tuesday was set for Dustin's first supervised visitation at the Family Services Center downtown.

I sat in the waiting area, a cold, sterile room filled with plastic chairs and worn-out toys. Meadow was huddled beside me, gripping her favorite stuffed elephant, Peanut. Her beanie was pulled low, concealing every trace of her head.

A social worker named Sarah, a calm woman with a clipboard, walked over to us. "Claire? Dustin is in Observation Room B. Are you ready?"

Meadow’s entire body went rigid. She grabbed my sleeve, her fingers twisting the fabric into tight knots. She shook her head frantically, her big green eyes wide with terror.

"I’m coming with you to the door, sweetie," I whispered, kneeling down so I was eye-to-eye with her. "You are completely safe. The social worker will be in the room the entire time. Daddy cannot hurt you, and Grandma is not here. If you want to leave at any time, you just point at the door, okay?"

Meadow didn't nod. She just held her breath, her tiny shoes dragging on the floor as Sarah led us down the hallway.

When Sarah opened the door to Room B, Dustin was sitting at a small wooden table. He had brought a giant yellow gift box wrapped in silver ribbons and a massive bouquet of daisies—Meadow’s favorite flowers before all of this happened.

"Meadow!" Dustin stood up eagerly, his voice loud and overenthusiastic. "Look what Daddy brought you! I bought you that huge Lego set you wanted! The princess castle!"

Meadow stopped dead in her tracks at the threshold. She didn't look at the toys. She didn't look at the daisies. She looked at Dustin’s face, and then her eyes drifted down to his hands. She saw the man who had told her grandmother that "she needed correction."

"Come here, give Daddy a hug," Dustin said, taking a step forward.

Meadow took three fast steps backward, burying her face into my hip, her chest heaving as silent sobs racked her body.

"Claire, tell her it's okay!" Dustin snapped, his fake pleasant demeanor evaporating in an instant. "You’ve brainwashed her! You’ve turned my own daughter against me!"

"Mr. Miller, step back immediately," Sarah ordered firmly, placing herself between Dustin and us. "You are raising your voice and causing the child distress. If you cannot maintain a calm composure, this session will be terminated."

"She’s my daughter!" Dustin yelled, his eyes flashing with the familiar, entitlement-driven rage he had inherited from Judith. "I have a right to hug my child! This is ridiculous! Claire, you’re acting like a psychopath over a simple lesson in discipline!"

That was it. The mask had slipped completely. He didn't care about Meadow’s trauma; he cared about his control being challenged.

"Session terminated," Sarah said flatly, pulling out her radio. "Security to Room B."

"Meadow, look at me!" Dustin shouted as Sarah guided us back toward the hallway. "Grandma loves you! We were just trying to keep you humble! You don't need to be so vain!"

The word vanity echoed through the corridor like a slap. Meadow covered her ears with both hands, squealing in silent agony as tears flooded her cheeks.

I ushered her out of the building as fast as my feet could carry us, holding her close while security escorted Dustin out the back entrance.

When we got back to the apartment, Meadow did something she hadn't done since the incident. She walked directly into the bathroom.

Panic seized me. I rushed after her, fear gripping my chest that she might hurt herself. But when I reached the bathroom door, I stopped.

Meadow was standing in front of the full-length mirror. Slowly, with trembling hands, she reached up and pulled off her pink beanie.

The reflection showed the harsh, jagged reality of what Judith had done. Her golden waist-length hair was gone, replaced by uneven patches of stubble, red scrape marks, and awkward tufts of hair. She looked at herself for a long, agonizing minute.

Then, she picked up a tube of my red lipstick off the counter.

I held my breath, watching through the doorway.

Meadow stepped closer to the glass and painted a large, red "X" over her reflection in the mirror. Then she turned around, looked at me with hollow eyes, and collapsed onto the bathroom floor, weeping without making a single sound.

I dropped to my knees beside her, pulling her small, frail body into my lap. I wrapped my arms around her, kissing the raw spots on her scalp, letting my own tears soak into her skin.

"I'm sorry," I sobbed into her neck. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there to stop them. But I swear to you, Meadow... no one will ever break you again. I will fight them until my last breath."
