Chapter 10 - The Quiet Mercy (Happy Ending)

Two years later.

It was 10:43 p.m.

The exact same time I had stood in Ethan’s kitchen two years ago, begging my mother for forty-seven dollars.

I stood in the vast, beautiful kitchen of our shared estate. The marble counters were spotless. The soft hum of the refrigerator filled the room. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the swimming pool shimmered under the pale moonlight.

I walked over to the pantry.

The shelves were lined with rows of healthy food, baby supplies, and at the very center sat one unopened, vintage can of lactose-free formula—the original sixth can from that fateful Thursday morning, kept as a reminder of where we started.

Warm hands wrapped around my waist from behind.

Ethan kissed the side of my neck, his arms pulling me gently against his chest.

"What are you doing up so late, Mrs. Parker?" he asked softly.

"Just looking," I smiled, leaning back against him.

In the nursery upstairs, two-year-old Santi was sleeping peacefully in his bed, while in the adjacent room, our three-month-old daughter, Lily, was asleep in her cradle.

"You know," Ethan whispered, looking at the silver-and-blue formula can on the shelf, "that was the best forty-seven dollars I ever spent."

"It wasn't forty-seven dollars, Ethan," I said, turning around to look into the dark, loving eyes of my husband. "It was mercy. It was quiet, unselfish mercy."

"It brought me you," Ethan said, gently kissing my forehead. "It brought me my whole life."

We stood there together in the quiet warmth of our home, holding each other tight, knowing that no matter what storms raged outside in the world, inside these walls there would only ever be love, safety, and an unbreakable family.
