Chapter 5 - The Confrontation on the Driveway

The afternoon air was cold and crisp as we walked down the long, paved driveway toward the iron gates.

Standing outside were Regina Hale, her husband Arthur Hale—a tall, skeletal man with thin silver hair and an expensive tailored coat—two men in dark suits carrying cameras, and a court official holding a yellow legal summons.

When Regina saw Ethan approaching with me walking firmly at his side, her lips curled into a disdainful sneer.

"Ethan," Arthur Hale spoke first, his voice dry and raspy. "Save us the drama. Open the gate. We have a court order authorizing an independent asset inventory of this residence."

"You have a temporary petition, Arthur," Ethan said smoothly, stopping three feet short of the iron bars. "Not a signed warrant. You know as well as I do that your filing hasn't been reviewed by a judge yet."

Regina stepped forward, her silk gloves clutching her leather purse. "It will be signed by four o'clock, Ethan. Judge Montgomery is a close personal friend of ours. Once he reviews the records of your sudden, exorbitant payments to this... maid, your reputation as a disciplined CEO is finished."

She turned her venomous gaze onto me.

"And you," Regina hissed. "You thought you hit the jackpot, didn't you? A pretty little girl from the slums of Mesquite manipulating a lonely rich man. Did you think we wouldn't look into your family? We know about your brother, Maya. We know he owes eighty thousand dollars to a criminal syndicate in East Dallas. We know he tried to shake Ethan down right at this gate."

My hands clenched into fists, but I didn't break eye contact with her.

"My brother is under a legally binding restraining order, Mrs. Hale," I said, my voice ringing out clear and strong. "He has nothing to do with my work here, and he has nothing to do with Mr. Parker."

"Work?" Regina laughed bitterly. "An eighty-five-thousand-dollar salary for fluffing pillows and buying groceries? That’s not work, dear. That’s a payoff."

"It’s an executive salary," Ethan interjected, his tone dropping like an anvil. "And if you had checked her credentials before launching your pathetic little smear campaign, Regina, you would know that Maya holds an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from North Texas College, which she completed while working sixty hours a week."

Regina blinked, momentarily caught off guard.

"Furthermore," Ethan continued, pulling a heavy flash drive out of his coat pocket, "while you were busy paying private investigators to stalk a young mother and her baby, my security team was examining the ledger entries for Hale Logistics' European shipping routes."

Arthur Hale’s pale face suddenly turned ghost white. "What are you talking about, Ethan?"

"I’m talking about the twelve million dollars routed through Shell accounts in Cyprus over the last three fiscal years, Arthur," Ethan said coldly. "Directly signed off by your wife’s personal estate trust."

Regina swallowed hard. The color drained from her cheeks beneath her heavy foundation.

"If that court petition isn't withdrawn from Judge Montgomery’s desk by three-thirty today," Ethan said, stepping directly against the iron gate, his eyes burning into Arthur, "I hand this drive directly to the Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service."

Silence fell over the driveway. The two private investigators shifted uncomfortably, lowering their cameras.

Arthur Hale turned slowly toward his wife, his jaw tight with panic. "Regina... what is he talking about? What Cyprus accounts?"

Regina’s confident demeanor shattered into frantic, terrified eyes. She looked at Ethan, then at the flash drive in his hand, and finally at me.

"You... you’re bluffing," Regina stammered, her voice losing all its regal authority.

"Try me," Ethan whispered.
