Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Family Empire

The revelation of Ethan's financial theft fractured what little remained of the Vance family support structure. Board members began resigning in droves, and the company stock dipped by fourteen percent in two days.
My mother spent days locked in her quarters, caught between the agonizing maternal instinct to protect her son and the horrific reality of what he had done to her daughter.
On Thursday evening, while Victoria was in the study preparing for the preliminary court hearing, the heavy mahogany front doors of the estate slammed open.
I rolled my power chair out into the grand foyer just as security guards rushed toward the entrance. Ethan stood in the doorway. He looked unkempt, his designer suit wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles carved beneath them. He smelled heavily of bourbon.
"Ethan!" I yelled, bringing my chair to a stop near the base of the staircase. "You are violating the restraining order! Get out!"
"Shut up, Clara!" he roared, brushing past a security officer who hesitated to physically tackle the CEO's son. "Where is Mother?! Where is she?!"
Mother ran down the stairs, her robe trailing behind her. "Ethan! My God, what are you doing here? The police will arrest you!"
"Tell them to drop the charges, Mom!" Ethan pleaded, stepping toward her, his voice frantic and laced with panic. "You have to make Clara drop the charges! Victoria is freezing my personal accounts! The bank is calling in my loans! I'm going to lose everything!"
"You brought this on yourself!" I shouted over his panicking rants. "You stole millions from the trust, Ethan! You thought you could throw me onto concrete and call me a fraud?!"
Ethan turned his glare onto me, his face twisting into a hideous sneer. "You ARE a fraud! Look at you! Sitting in that chair, playing the innocent victim! Dad left you the majority of the company because he pitied you! You don't work! You don't build anything! I built this empire while you sat here feeling sorry for yourself!"
"Dad left her the trust because he knew you were unstable, Ethan," Victoria’s voice echoed calmly from the top of the stairs. She descended slowly, holding her phone, which was clearly recording the entire interaction. "And as of ten minutes ago, I have submitted this live footage to Detective Ruiz. You have officially breached your bail conditions."
Sirens began to wail in the long driveway outside the estate. Ethan’s eyes widened in realization. He had fallen right into a trap.
"You trapped me..." Ethan whispered, looking at Mother with desperation. "Mom... please. Don't let them take me back to jail. Tell them it was a mistake!"
Mother stood on the stairs, tears streaming down her face. She looked at Ethan, then turned her eyes to me—to my sling, my neck brace, and the quiet dignity in my posture.
For the first time in her life, Mother didn't make an excuse for her son.
"You hurt your sister, Ethan," Mother said softly, her voice filled with absolute, devastating clarity. "You broke her body, and you broke this family. I cannot save you from yourself anymore."

Two police officers barged through the front doors, weapons unholstered. Within seconds, Ethan was slammed face-down onto the marble floor—the very same floor he had thrown me onto nights before—and forced into restraints.
As he was dragged out into the rain, screaming curses at the top of his lungs, Mother sank onto the stairs and wept softly. I rolled my chair over to her side, leaning my head against her arm.
