Chapter 5 - A Calculated Betrayal

With Ethan held without bail due to his violation of the protective order, Victoria and I spent the next two weeks digging into the deeper layers of Ethan's financial dealings.

What we found went far beyond simple embezzlement.

Sitting around the long dining table with a team of forensic accountants hired by Victoria, we uncovered a paper trail that made my blood run cold.

"It wasn't just the trust money, Clara," said Mark Vance, the lead forensic auditor. "Ethan was using your identity. He forged your medical power of attorney two years ago."

I felt a chill wash over me. "What does that mean?"

"He took out three massive life insurance policies in your name," Victoria explained, tossing a thick document onto the table. "Totaling fifteen million dollars. And the primary beneficiary... was Ethan himself."

The room went dead silent. The hum of the air conditioning seemed to amplify the horror of the realization.

"The car accident three years ago..." I whispered, the memory of that horrifying night flashing through my mind—the slick roads, the sudden failure of the brakes on the vehicle Ethan had lent me for the evening. "He was driving behind me that night."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits. "Clara... are you saying what I think you're saying?"

"The brakes failed on the mountain pass," I said, my voice trembling as old trauma resurfaced with terrifying clarity. "Ethan insisted I take his sports car that night instead of my sedan. He said he had just gotten it serviced. When I tried to slow down at the hairpin turn, the pedal went straight to the floor."

"Jesus," Mark whispered, looking up from his laptop. "If he set up those life insurance policies right before that accident..."

"We need the mechanic records from three years ago," Victoria demanded, standing up immediately and grabbing her coat. "If Ethan tampered with those brake lines, this isn't just aggravated assault and embezzlement anymore. This is attempted murder."

We spent the next forty-eight hours working round the clock. Victoria used her legal authority to issue subpoenas for the automotive shop Ethan used in 2023. What we uncovered was the smoking gun: an anonymous cash payment of $20,000 made to a disgraced mechanic to alter the brake assembly of the sports car twenty-four hours before my accident.

The narrative Ethan had constructed—that I was a weak, pathetic sister taking advantage of the family—was completely inverted. Ethan was a calculating, cold-blooded monster who had tried to kill me once, failed, left me paralyzed, and then spent three years attempting to finish the job mentally before physically attacking me in public.

Armed with this new evidence, Victoria filed amended charges with the District Attorney's office. Ethan was no longer just facing a few years for assault. He was looking at life in prison.
