Chapter 5 - The Trap

Desperate people make reckless mistakes. As public pressure mounted and financial scrutiny began closing in, Grant’s arrogance turned into panic.
Late on a Friday evening, while I was out meeting with an investigator, my home security system pinged my watch. Two motion sensors along the perimeter of my garage had been tripped, followed immediately by an override attempt on my back door lock.
I didn't call the local police; I called the State Police Special Investigations Unit, with whom I had established a direct line of communication regarding the federal corruption probe.
Inside my home, Claire had stepped into a fortified safe room built into the master closet—a precaution I had installed the day she came home from the hospital.
Through the hidden cameras, I watched Grant Hawthorne and a hired thug break through the patio door. Grant held a crowbar, his face contorted with rage as he searched the hallway.
"Claire!" Grant roared, his voice echoing through the security feeds. "Come out here! You think your pathetic old dad can save you? You ruined my life! You ruined my family's name!"
He kicked open the bedroom door, searching for her. He was looking for her laptop and hard drives—hoping to destroy the original digital evidence before the preliminary court hearing on Monday.
"Looking for these?" my voice suddenly echoed through the home intercom system.

Grant spun around, staring at the speaker on the wall. "Where are you, you old bastard?!"
"I'm ten miles away, Grant," I said calmly over the speaker. "But the State Police tactical unit is ten seconds from your back door."
