Chapter 7 - Exposed Secrets
The preliminary trial of State vs. Grant Hawthorne became the regional event of the year.
The courtroom was packed with reporters, local citizens, and victims of Hawthorne business scams. Grant sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, flanked by two top-tier defense attorneys who looked increasingly demoralized as the evidence was introduced.
Evelyn and the state prosecutor presented a masterclass in prosecution. The audio files were played in open court—Claire’s desperate voice, the sound of violence, and Grant’s chilling, arrogant admissions.
Then came the surprise witness: Sarah, Grant’s former fiancée, took the stand. She detailed the pattern of abuse, controlling behavior, and violent outbursts that mirrored Claire’s experience down to the exact phrases Grant used to degrade them.
When Claire took the witness stand, the room fell dead silent.
She wore a crisp navy suit, sitting straight and strong. Under cross-examination, Grant’s attorney tried to portray her as unstable and mercenary.
"Mrs. Hawthorne," the defense attorney asked condescendingly, "isn't it true you only began making these claims after realizing you would not inherit a portion of the family estate?"
Claire looked directly at the defense attorney, then turned her eyes to the jury.

"I didn't care about their money when I married Grant, and I care even less about it now," she said, her voice clear and unbroken. "I stayed because I was afraid he would kill me or my father if I left. I am standing here today to prove that fear doesn't control my life anymore. Grant Hawthorne is a coward who hides behind his mother's money."
The jury looked at Grant. Grant glared back, slamming his fist onto the table in a sudden burst of rage—a display that sealed his fate in the eyes of everyone present.
