Chapter 3 - The First Domino Falls

The office of Richard Vance, the chief legal counsel for the Whitaker family, was located on the forty-second floor of a gleaming glass skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River. He was a man who spent his life translating cruelty into legal jargon, protecting the wealthy from the consequences of their actions.
At 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Richard Vance was sitting at his mahogany desk when his secretary notified him that a courier had delivered a personal, hand-labeled package.
Inside the package was a single, high-capacity USB drive and a printed letter bearing the letterhead of my private security firm, Redstone Tactical Solutions.
The letter read:
Mr. Vance,
We are currently in possession of the original digital video recorded by Julian Whitaker on Sunday evening, showing the systematic, aggravated assault of Emily Vance.
We are also in possession of the double-entry accounting ledgers from Whitaker Logistics & Development regarding their customs evasions from 2024 to 2026, as well as the wire transfers linking Julian Whitaker to illegal drug purchases in Cicero.
At 12:00 p.m. today, copies of these files will be delivered to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
You have two hours to advise your clients to prepare for their defense. Do not attempt to contact us. The time for negotiation has expired.
According to the audio bug Patel had planted in Vance's office ventilation shaft earlier that morning, the lawyer's reaction was instantaneous.
"Get me Arthur Whitaker on the phone right now!" Vance was screaming, his voice cracking with a high-pitched panic that we had never heard before. "No, I don't care if he’s in a board meeting! Pull him out! We have a catastrophic breach!"
Inside our operations center, my class of twenty-four operators watched the digital map of the city light up as the communication traffic between the Whitaker family members spiked into a red zone.
"They're panicking, John," Patel said, his eyes tracking the calls. "Arthur is calling Julian. Julian is calling his mother. Denise is calling her sister. It's a circular firing squad of communication."
"Let them talk," I said, leaning back in my chair. "The more they talk, the more evidence they generate on their personal devices. Patel, keep the recorders running. Every text, every call, every frantic voice mail is now part of our discovery file."
Thirty minutes later, the federal authorities received our anonymous packet.
The response was swift, coordinated, and brutal.
By 11:30 a.m., three black federal vehicles pulled up to the curb of Whitaker Logistics & Development’s headquarters in Rosemont. Eight armed agents from the Customs and Border Protection Internal Affairs division entered the building, carrying federal search warrants for the company's financial servers.
At the same time, a separate team of Chicago police detectives arrived at the downtown penthouse office of Vanguard Capital, arrest warrant in hand for Julian Whitaker.

"Dominino number one is down," Mara Vale said, marking Julian’s face on the wall with a red 'X'. "He was arrested in his office. They found four ounces of pharmaceutical-grade cocaine in his desk drawer. He’s currently being booked at the Cook County Jail. No bail."
I looked at the screen, my face hard. "Good. Now, let's look at the mother."
