Chapter 5 - The Legal Dragnet
By the fifth day of the operation, the tactical dragnet had extended far beyond the financial sector.
Our Team Delta had successfully returned from Indiana, accompanied by Sarah Jenkins, Garrett Whitaker’s former fiancée. Sarah was a delicate, intelligent young woman in her late twenties, her eyes carrying the deep, quiet shadow of survival.
She sat in our secure guest suite, wrapped in a warm blanket, drinking tea while Mara Vale and our lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton, sat with her.
"They threatened my family, Mr. Vance," Sarah said, her voice a quiet whisper. "Garrett... he has a terrible temper. The last time he hurt me, his father’s lawyer came to my apartment with a check for five hundred thousand dollars. He told me that if I went to the police, they would use their connections to have my father’s business license revoked and make sure I never found work in this state again. I was so scared."
"You don't have to be scared anymore, Sarah," I said, walking into the room. "You are under our protection. We have twenty-four-hour armed security on your father’s house, and our legal team is prepared to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against Garrett and the Whitaker Group for extortion, intimidation, and physical battery."
Sarah looked at me, her eyes shining with tears. "Why are you doing this? You don't even know me."
"Because they did it to my daughter too," I said, my voice gentle but unyielding. "And because people like the Whitakers only survive because they keep their victims isolated in the dark. We are going to turn the lights on, Sarah. All of them."
By Friday afternoon, Pendelton had filed the civil lawsuit in the federal district court.
The filing was a masterpiece of legal warfare. It didn't just target Garrett; it named Arthur, Denise, and their lead attorney, Richard Vance, as co-conspirators in a systematic pattern of domestic abuse concealment, corporate extortion, and witness intimidation.
Within three hours of the filing, the story was picked up by the national legal journals.
"Garrett’s corporate partners have just pulled out of their joint venture in Denver," Sarah Vance reported from her terminal. "And his personal bank accounts have been frozen under a temporary restraining order issued by the federal judge. He’s completely cut off from the family trust."

"That’s four down," Mara Vale said, marking Garrett’s face with a red 'X' next to Julian's, Denise's, and Arthur's. "The perimeter is shrinking. The rest of them are starting to run."
"Let them run," I said. "But make sure our teams are waiting at every exit."
