Chapter 2 - The Federal Docket

By 9:00 a.m., the United States District Courthouse in downtown Nashville was completely surrounded by press trucks, broadcast satellite vans, and news reporters.

Headline banners across every national news network read: MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR SYNICATE TOPPLED: PROMINENT CEO DOMINIC WARD ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FEDERAL RAID.

Inside Courtroom 4A, Chief Judge Marcus Evans—a longtime colleague and trusted friend of thirty years—sat on the bench for the initial appearance and arraignment. Because I was directly related to the victim, I had properly recused myself from the criminal proceedings, handing the case file over to the United States Attorney’s Office.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored black wool suit. Beside me sat Clara, dressed in a simple, elegant ivory sweater dress, her hand held firmly in mine. Her bruises were visible, but she held her head high, refusing to look down.

The side door opened, and heavy iron chains clinked against the concrete floor.

Dominic Ward was escorted into the courtroom by two heavily armed federal marshals.

The man who had spent two years strutting through country clubs in five-thousand-dollar tailored suits was now wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at his waist, his feet shackled, his hair unwashed. He looked wild, furious, and utterly diminished.

Beside him walked his chief defense counsel, Arthur Pendelton—the most expensive, ruthless corporate defense attorney in the state.

"All rise," the bailiff called out.

Chief Judge Evans looked down over his reading glasses at the defense table with absolute, icy disinterest.

"Case number 26-CR-4091: United States of America versus Dominic Ward," Judge Evans announced. "Mr. Pendelton, I have received your emergency petition for immediate bail."

"Your Honor!" Pendelton stepped up to the podium, his voice filled with grand standing authority. "My client is a pillar of this community! He is an employer of hundreds of citizens, a philanthropist, and a man with deep roots in this city! The allegations made against him are based on uncorroborated claims by an estranged wife who broke into her mother’s house after a domestic argument—"

"Mr. Pendelton," Judge Evans interrupted, his voice like iron sliding over stone. "Do not waste my time with theatrical fiction. The grand jury indictment includes forty-six counts of racketeering, federal narcotics trafficking, bribery of public officials, money laundering, and illegal firearm possession. Furthermore, the court has reviewed audio recordings captured under a federal wiretap authorized six hours prior to your client’s arrest."

Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently under his skin. He glared across the courtroom at Clara, his eyes filled with venomous rage.

Clara didn't flinch. She stared back at him, her eyes clear, steady, and completely devoid of fear.

"The wiretap recordings," Judge Evans continued, "include explicit verbal threats made by Mr. Ward to a sitting federal officer and a victim of severe physical battery. The defendant explicitly stated that local law enforcement took his money and would assist him in committing acts of violence."

"Your Honor, those tapes are subject to a motion to suppress!" Pendelton shouted.

"Your motion is denied," Judge Evans barked. "Given the vast financial resources at the defendant's disposal, his documented ownership of private aircraft, his history of witness intimidation, and the overwhelming evidence of violent criminal enterprise, this court finds that no combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community or the victim."

Judge Hayes struck his gavel once. CRACK.

"Bail is DENIED. The defendant will remain in federal custody at the Mason County Correctional Facility pending trial."

Dominic’s face flushed blood-red. "You can't do this! Do you know who I am?! Victoria! Look at me!" he screamed, straining against his chains as the marshals grabbed his arms. "You think you've won?! I have accounts you’ll never find! I have people outside these walls who will burn your life to the ground!"

I stood up slowly, stepping into the center aisle as the marshals pulled him toward the holding door.

"Dominic," I said softly, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent courtroom. "The men outside these walls are currently being interviewed by the FBI. You are alone."

Dominic roared in frustration, a pathetic, broken sound, as the iron door slammed shut behind him.
