Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Solitude

Following the arraignment, I took Clara straight back to my estate in Belle Meade.

My property was no longer just a quiet residential home; it had been converted into a high-security federal perimeter. Federal Marshals maintained twenty-four-hour surveillance at the gates, security cameras covered every angle of the oak trees, and Tom Vance—a former Special Forces operator and long-time head of judicial security—supervised the ground patrol.

Inside the library, sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows, illuminating the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined with decades of legal precedent.

Clara sat in a leather armchair, sipping warm chamomile tea, her laptop resting on her knees.

For the first time in months, she was smiling.

"Mom," she said, looking up from her screen. "The bank called. Dominic’s legal team tried to freeze my personal checking accounts this morning, claiming they were marital assets."

I pulled a leather-bound file from my desk. "And what did you tell them?"

"I told them to read the emergency civil protection order signed by Judge Evans," Clara said, her voice ringing with newfound pride. "I told them that if they touched one dollar of my personal inheritance, I would have Federal Marshals audit their entire branch by noon."

I laughed—a genuine, proud laugh that warmed the heavy room. "That’s my girl."

A quiet knock sounded at the library door. Tom Vance stepped in, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

"Judge Sterling," Tom said, his face serious. "We have a development. Arthur Pendelton just left the county jail after a three-hour meeting with Dominic Ward."

"What’s their play, Tom?" I asked, walking over to the desk.

"Dominic isn't giving up on his money," Tom explained, zooming in on a series of financial flowcharts on the screen. "Before his arrest, Dominic transferred thirty million dollars in liquid capital out of Ward Logistics into a shadowy offshore entity called 'Aegis Holdings,' registered in the Cayman Islands. That money was intended to pay off his international suppliers and secure his escape network."

Clara leaned forward, her brow furrowing. "Aegis Holdings? I’ve seen that name before... on papers Dominic kept in his private home safe."

"Did you copy them, Clara?" I asked quickly.

Clara reached into her handbag, pulling out a small, metallic silver thumb drive.

"Six months ago, when Dominic left for a business trip in London," Clara explained, her voice remarkably calm, "I bought a small hardware cloner. I opened his wall safe while he was away, scanned every financial document, tax ledger, and corporate deed he owned, and saved them to this drive. I hid it inside the lining of my leather boots."

Tom Vance stared at Clara in absolute disbelief, then broke into a wide grin. "Judge... your daughter doesn't just have courage. She has tactical intelligence."

I looked at Clara, my heart swelling with pride. "You kept this hidden for six months?"

"I knew I only had one chance to escape," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with quiet strength. "I knew that if I left without proof, he would use his money to hunt me down, buy the courts, and take my child from me. I was waiting for the right moment."

May you like

I took the thumb drive from her hand, placing it into my secure workstation.

"Clara," I said softly, looking into her eyes. "You just gave us the key to his entire vault."
