Chapter 10 - A Safe Place to Bloom

Two years later.

The morning sun washed over the golden meadow behind our new home—a charming, sunlit farmhouse situated on three acres of land near the coast, far away from the city and the dark memories of the Carter family estate.

The house was filled with the warm smells of fresh blueberry pancakes, warm maple syrup, and roasted coffee.

I stood by the kitchen island, watching through the large bay window as Lily ran across the green lawn with our new golden retriever pup, her bright laughter floating through the open window like music.

She was eight years old now. Her cheeks were healthy and rosy, her eyes were bright and full of life, and she no longer woke up crying from nightmares of dark parking garages.

Jenna stepped up beside me, placing a hot mug of coffee in my hand. “She’s fast,” Jenna smiled, watching Lily chase the puppy around an old oak tree.

“She’s happy,” I said, feeling a warmth in my chest that no amount of money or prestige could ever buy.

With the settlement money recovered from the liquidating of Diane’s remaining seized assets, I had established The Lily Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to helping mothers escape domestic abuse, protecting children from family exploitation, and providing legal aid to vulnerable parents fighting predatory custody battles.

Marcus Kane served as our chief security consultant, ensuring that every family under our care was completely safe.

A few minutes later, the back door flew open, and Lily bounded into the kitchen, her bright yellow sundress trailing slightly in the grass. Her feet were bare, running comfortably across the warm wooden floorboards.

“Mommy! Look what I found!” she squealed happily, holding out her small hands.

Inside her palms was a tiny, perfectly blooming yellow wildflower.

“It’s beautiful, sweetie,” I smiled, kneeling down to her level and tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

Lily leaned in and wrapped her arms tightly around my neck, resting her head against my shoulder.

“I love our home, Mommy,” she whispered softly into my ear. “I feel safe here.”

I held my daughter close, feeling her strong, steady heartbeat against mine, looking out over the quiet, sunny meadow where no shadows could ever touch us again.

“You are safe, my sweet girl,” I whispered back, kissing her forehead. “You are safe forever.”
