Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

“Stop right there, Sarah!” Julian Vance barked, raising his weapon and pointing it directly at my chest.

I stopped twenty feet away, raising my open hands into the air. My eyes stayed locked on Lily. “I’m here,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the terror ripping through me. “I did what you asked. Let my daughter go.”

Diane stepped forward out of the shadows. The polished, elegant matriarch was completely gone; in her place was a frantic, broken woman whose eyes were wide with madness.

“Look at what you made me do, Sarah!” Diane wailed, gesturing wildly around the dirty, rusted room. “I built an empire! My husband worked thirty years to give us prestige, respect, and wealth! And you... you ruined it all in a single night!”

“You ruined it yourself, Diane!” I said, stepping half an inch forward. “You gambled your family’s fortune away! You took loans from criminals! You used your own grandchildren as financial chips!”

“They were my trust funds!” Diane shrieked, her voice echoing off the high concrete walls. “My late husband created them with my estate’s money! I was only taking back what was rightfully mine! If you had just accepted the miscommunication at the mall, if you had just kept your mouth shut, Julian would have taken Lily for a few weeks, I would have collected the insurance payout, and everyone would have been fine!”

In my earpiece, Marcus’s voice came through as a tiny, static whisper: “I’m on the upper gantry directly above Vance. Ten seconds. Keep his eyes on you.”

“She’s six years old, Diane!” I cried out, my tears mixing with the rain dripping from my hair. “She’s your own blood! How could you look into her eyes and leave her in that garage? How could you hand her over to a monster?!”

Julian chuckled darkly, shifting his grip on the gun. “Enough talking, Diane. The private boat is waiting at the river deck. Let's finish this and get out of here before the cops show up.”

Julian raised the gun, aiming it at my head.

Suddenly, Mark groaned from the floor, stirring back to consciousness. He saw Julian pointing the gun at me, and with a sudden, desperate burst of strength, Mark lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s legs.

“RUN, SARAH!” Mark screamed.

Julian yelled in surprise, losing his balance and firing a wild shot into the air.

At that exact second, the glass roof of the silo shattered in a shower of sparks. Marcus dropped down from the upper gantry on a tactical cable, slamming into Julian with full force and bowling him onto the concrete floor. The pistol skittered across the floor, sliding straight to my feet.
