Chapter 10 - The Sterling Ballroom, Reclaimed

Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the Sterling Hotel was once again filled with glittering chandeliers, white rose centerpieces, and the elite of Chicago. But tonight, the atmosphere was completely different.
The Moretti family was gone, dismantled by the federal government using evidence provided anonymously by the Caruso syndicate. Marcus Whitman was serving a fifteen-year sentence in a maximum-security prison for fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder.
Tonight was the annual Caruso Charity Gala.
Emma stood near the marble columns, wearing a breathtaking white lace gown that looked suspiciously like a wedding dress. She held a champagne flute, but her hands were perfectly steady.
"You look far better in white lace than in a black apron, Mrs. Caruso," a raspy voice spoke beside her.
Emma turned and smiled warmly at Don Silvano. The old man was dressed in his finest tuxedo, leaning on his gold-headed cane, looking at her with genuine affection.
"Thank you, Don Silvano," Emma said, clinking her glass against his. "Though I still know how to pour a perfect drink if you need one."
The old man laughed, a deep, hearty sound. "No, no. You are the queen of this house now. Let the servants do the pouring." He patted her cheek gently. "You made a man out of my grandson, Emma. You gave him something worth protecting."
As Don Silvano walked away to greet some politicians, a pair of strong arms wrapped around Emma’s waist from behind. The familiar scent of cedarwood and rain enveloped her.
"Are you enjoying your evening, wife?" Dante murmured against her neck, his lips brushing her skin, sending a delicious shiver through her.
They had been married in a small, private ceremony in Sicily two months ago, far away from the violence and drama of their past. It was no longer a fake engagement; it was a real, deep, and unyielding love born from the ashes of their trials.
Emma turned around in his embrace, looping her arms around Dante’s neck. She looked up into his smoke-gray eyes, which were now filled only with warmth and devotion for her.
"I was just remembering the last time I was in this room," Emma admitted, a small, playful smile on her lips. "A man tried to humiliate me here."
Dante’s eyes darkened slightly, though his smile remained. "A foolish man who lost everything because he didn't know the value of a diamond." He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. "And what did you do when he tried to humiliate you?"
"I waited," Emma whispered, her heart full of a joy she never thought she’d experience again. "I waited until the mafia boss stood up."

Dante laughed, a low, rich sound, and captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss right in the center of the ballroom. This time, there were no whispers of malice, no stares of pity. The crowd around them clapped and raised their glasses to the new King and Queen of Chicago.
Emma Hart had finally ended up exactly where she belonged—in the arms of the man who loved her.
