Chapter 8 - The Breach

The attack came at three o'clock on a rainy Tuesday morning.
Emma was awakened by the sound of muffled explosions at the perimeter gates, followed immediately by the rapid, terrifying rattle of automatic gunfire. The mansion's alarms began to wail, a deafening red strobe light flashing in the hallway.
Before she could jump out of bed, her bedroom door burst open. Dante was there, a heavy black assault rifle in his hands, tactical body armor strapped over his shirt.
"Emma! Under the bed, now!" he ordered, his voice commanding and steady despite the chaos echoing from downstairs.
"Dante, what's happening?" she screamed as a bullet shattered her bedroom window, showering the room in shards of glass.
"The Morettis bridged the sea wall," Dante said, pulling her up and shoving her toward a hidden panel in the walk-in closet. "Marco! Take her to the safe room down below. Do not stop for anything!"
Marco appeared, his face bloody from a grazing wound, a pistol drawn. "Understood, boss. Let's go, Miss Hart!"
"Dante, no! Come with us!" Emma cried out, reaching for him. She realized in that terrifying moment that her greatest fear wasn't dying; it was losing him. She had fallen in love with her captor, her protector, her fake fiancé.
Dante caught her hand, pulling her into a brief, bruising, desperate kiss that tasted of rain and copper.
"I have to end this, Emma," he whispered against her lips. "I will come back for you. I promise."
Marco dragged her into the hidden stairwell just as the bedroom door was blown off its hinges by a shotgun blast.
The descent into the concrete bunker beneath the house felt like an eternity. The sounds of gunfire and explosions muffled as they went deeper, replaced by the heavy thumping of her own heart. Marco slammed the massive steel vault door shut, locking them inside a room filled with monitors showing the estate's security feeds.
Emma watched the screens in horror.
She saw Dante moving through the burning hallways of his home like a shadow, taking down enemy gunmen with lethal, terrifying precision. He was a force of nature, a true mafia boss protecting his kingdom.
But then, on the main foyer camera, she saw a familiar figure creeping up behind Dante, a silver pistol raised.
Marcus.

Her ex-husband had used the chaos to slip into the house, his face twisted with a manic, murderous rage. He was aiming directly at Dante’s back while Dante was engaged with two Moretti hitmen.
"Dante!" Emma screamed at the monitor, knowing he couldn't hear her. "Look behind you!"
