Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

By Monday morning, the lobby of Bennett Event Systems looked like a high-profile media circus. Cameras were set up near the turnstiles, reporters held microphones ready, and security guards stood in a tight line to control the crowd of journalists angling for a statement.

I walked through the front doors at precisely eight-thirty, wearing an ivory tailored suit that practically screamed invincibility. I didn't stop for questions, giving only a polite nod to the camera crews as Priya and two bodyguards escorted me straight into the private executive elevator.

When the doors closed, the quiet hum of the elevator replaced the noise of the crowd.

"The District Attorney’s office called ten minutes ago," Priya said, reviewing her tablet. "They’ve issued a formal arrest warrant for Ethan. Charges include Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Scheme to Defraud, and Computer Tampering. They’re picking him up at his apartment in Soho as we speak."

"And Vanessa?" I asked.

"She turned over the emerald necklace and her engagement ring to the police this morning," Priya replied. "Her legal team is trying to frame her as an innocent party who was lied to about Ethan’s wealth. But her name is still on three signed vendor receipts from the wedding, so our civil attorneys are maintaining her as a co-defendant in the asset recovery suit."

"Keep the pressure on her," I said coldly. "She knew where that money was coming from. Nobody accepts a forty-one thousand dollar dress and an emerald necklace without asking a single question unless they’re intentionally looking the other way."

When we reached the forty-second floor, Rachel was already in my office, spreading out a series of corporate organizational charts across my desk.

"Julian Vance is panicking," Rachel said without preamble. "Apex Capital’s board of directors held an emergency meeting late last night. They’ve hired a white-collar defense team from Skadden Arps, and they’re trying to build a firewall between Vance and Ethan."

"Can they?" I asked, sitting down behind my desk.

"Not easily," Rachel smiled. "We found the smoking gun this morning."

She slid a printout across the desk. It was a copy of a confidential retainer agreement between Ethan Cole and a boutique consulting firm based in Delaware called Vanguard Strategic Solutions.

"Vanguard is a front," Rachel explained. "It was set up six months ago. The sole officer listed on Vanguard’s registration documents is a man named Marcus Kane—who happens to be Julian Vance’s personal wealth manager and head of corporate acquisitions at Apex."

"So Vance didn't just passively receive stolen data," I said, studying the document. "He actively paid Ethan a monthly retainer through Vanguard to extract information from our systems over the last half-year."

"Exactly," Rachel nodded. "This turns a corporate espionage civil suit into a federal RICO conspiracy case. Vance used corporate funds to pay Ethan to commit computer crimes against a competitor."

My phone chimed with a news alert. I tapped the screen.

The lead story on Bloomberg was breaking live: "FINTECH EXECUTIVE ETHAN COLE ARRESTED IN SOHO; ESCORTED IN HANDCUFFS BY NYPD FINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT."

Below the headline was a photograph. Ethan was wearing a crumpled gray hoodie, his hands cuffed behind his back, his head bowed low as two plainclothes detectives guided him into the back of an unmarked black sedan. He looked completely broken—no longer the polished, smooth-talking social climber who had charmed his way through Manhattan galas, but a pathetic, desperate man facing years in a state penitentiary.

A second alert popped up moments later: "APEX CAPITAL STOCK DROPS 14% AMID RUMORS OF FEDERAL SUBPOENA."

"The market is reacting," Priya noted, watching her terminal screen. "Investors are realizing that if Vance is indicted or forced out, Apex’s upcoming valuation is going to collapse."

"Good," I said. "Now it's time to cut off Vance's exit strategy."

"What do you have in mind?" Rachel asked.

"Julian Vance tried to destroy Bennett Event Systems by buying off Ethan and stealing our European launch assets," I said, standing up and gazing out at the Manhattan skyline. "Apex was planning to announce their acquisition of Grand European Hospitality Group next month—a deal that would have locked us out of the three largest hotel chains in Paris and London."

"Right," Priya said. "That deal was supposed to be Apex’s crown jewel."

"Call the board of Grand European Hospitality," I instructed. "Tell them that Bennett Event Systems is prepared to step in with a superior technology suite—one that isn't under federal criminal investigation for cyber theft. Tell them I’m flying to London tonight to present the terms in person."

"And what about Julian?" Rachel asked.

"Julian is going to be too busy answering questions from the Department of Justice to worry about London," I said. "He wanted a war. I’m going to give him an eviction notice from the industry."

Just then, my assistant knocked on the door and stepped in, holding a sleek black box tied with a satin ribbon that had arrived via white-glove courier.

"This just arrived for you, Ms. Bennett," she said, placing it on my desk. "It was hand-delivered from the Soho Grand Hotel."

I untied the ribbon and opened the lid. Inside was a small velvet box containing the emerald necklace Ethan had charged to my card—and a folded piece of heavy paper with a handwritten note from Vanessa:

"Claire,

I didn't know the extent of what Ethan was doing. I thought he was who he said he was. I am returning this to you directly because I want no part of his crimes. Please, pull my name from the lawsuit. He lied to me too.

— Vanessa"

I looked at the sparkling green stone sitting in the velvet, then at the note. I didn't feel triumph; I felt a cold, pristine clarity.

"Priya," I said.

"Yes?"

"Hand this necklace over to the District Attorney’s office as evidence in the grand larceny case. And tell Vanessa’s attorney that returning the stolen goods doesn't erase the crime. If she wants off the lawsuit, she gives a sworn deposition detailing every conversation she ever overheard between Ethan and Julian Vance."

May you like

"Understood," Priya said, a slight, wicked smile touching her lips.

"Pack my bags for London," I added, turning back to the window. "It’s time to expand the empire."
