Chapter 6 - Betrayal Among Thieves

The London deal was signed, sealed, and broadcast across global financial networks by Wednesday morning. On Wall Street, the reaction was instantaneous: Bennett Event Systems’ valuation surged by eighteen percent, while Apex Capital’s stock tanked into a freefall, losing nearly a third of its market capitalization in a single trading session.
Back in New York, the walls were closing in on Ethan Cole.
Without money for private bail, he remained stuck in a high-security holding block at Rikers Island. The reality of his situation had finally crushed his vanity. His designer suit had been replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit, his perfectly styled hair was matted, and his polished charm had dissolved into pure, desperate paranoia.
In a small, windowless interrogation room at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, Ethan sat across from his court-appointed public defender—his high-priced private defense attorneys having withdrawn after his retainer check bounced.
Across the metallic table sat Vanessa Sterling and her father’s legal counsel.
"You led me to believe you were a managing partner at Bennett," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with venom. She sat with her arms crossed, wearing a simple navy dress, completely stripped of the diamonds and luxury items Ethan had showered her with. "You used me. You used my family's social standing to give yourself credibility!"
"Vanessa, baby, listen to me—" Ethan began, his hands shaking in his cuffs.
"Don't 'baby' me!" she snapped. "I spent four hours yesterday being questioned by federal prosecutors! They showed me the wire transfers, Ethan! They showed me the forged corporate sponsorship letters with Claire’s electronic signature! You didn't just lie to her—you lied to everyone!"
"I did it for us!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking under the strain. "I was getting us the life we deserved! Julian Vance promised me a five-million-dollar buyout as soon as the European deal went through! We were going to be set for life!"
Vanessa’s attorney cleared his throat and slid a legal document across the table.
"Mr. Cole," the attorney said smoothly. "My client has signed a formal cooperation agreement with the District Attorney. In exchange for immunity regarding the unapproved event deposits, Ms. Sterling has provided a sworn affidavit detailing every promise you made regarding the stolen corporate database, as well as three recorded phone calls where you explicitly mentioned your arrangement with Julian Vance."
Ethan stared at the document, his breath catching in his throat. Blood drained from his face until he looked like a ghost.
"You... you betrayed me?" Ethan stammered, staring at Vanessa in absolute horror. "After everything I spent on you? The estate? The ring? The orchids?"
"You didn't spend anything on me, Ethan," Vanessa said coldly, standing up and pulling her coat around her shoulders. "Claire paid for all of it. And now she's taking it all back."
She turned and walked out of the room, leaving Ethan alone with his public defender.
Two hours later, Rachel Monroe received a copy of Vanessa’s sworn affidavit at our headquarters. She walked into my office where Priya and I were reviewing the integration timeline for the Grand European Hospitality Group.
"Vanessa broke," Rachel said, placing the document on my desk. "She gave prosecutors the exact timeline of Ethan’s meetings with Julian Vance’s middleman, Marcus Kane. She even provided text messages where Ethan bragged about downloading 'the keys to Claire’s kingdom' while I was asleep in London six months ago."
I skimmed through the affidavit. Every line was a revelation of petty greed and staggering arrogance. Ethan had truly believed he was the mastermind of a grand financial heist, when in reality he was nothing more than a disposable tool being manipulated by Julian Vance.
"Has Vance tried to contact Ethan's legal counsel?" I asked.
"Vance cut him off entirely," Rachel chuckled darky. "Apex Capital issued a formal statement two hours ago claiming they were 'appalled by Mr. Cole’s unauthorized actions' and denying any corporate involvement. They’re hanging Ethan out to dry."
"Then it's time to pull the net tight," I said, closing the binder. "Ethan has no bail money, no lawyer, no bride, and no allies left. What is his public defender offering?"
"He wants to trade a full guilty plea on all counts in exchange for testifying against Julian Vance and Marcus Kane," Rachel said.

I looked out at the city skyline, feeling the weight of the last three years finally lift from my chest. Ethan had tried to humiliate me on a grand stage, but his own dishonesty had torn his life apart piece by piece.
"Tell the DA we accept," I said softly. "Let Ethan tell the world exactly who he sold his soul to."
