Chapter 8 - The Birth of a Legacy

Six months later.
Spring had fully arrived in New York. The gardens of the Alpine estate were in full, brilliant bloom, covered in white hydrangeas, pink peonies, and lush green velvet lawns.
Today was the grand opening of the Eleanor Rossi Foundation.
Over two hundred guests—city officials, legal advocates, rescued survivors, and community leaders—gathered on the back lawn under a magnificent white silk pavilion.
I stood at the cedar podium wearing an elegant ice-blue dress, looking out over the crowd.
Beside the stage sat Rosa, wearing a beautiful silk dress, surrounded by her family. Front row center sat Daniel Mercer, smiling proudly.
And standing near the side of the stage, looking at me with fierce, devotion in his dark eyes, was Dominic Romano.
I leaned into the microphone, my voice carrying clear and steady across the sunny lawn.
"When I was twenty-three years old," I spoke into the afternoon breeze, "I was told that my value as a human being was tied to my ability to fulfill someone else's expectations. I was told that because I was broken in the eyes of greedy men, I was useless."
The crowd went quiet, listening intently to every word.
"For a long time, I believed them," I continued, smiling softly as my gaze found Dominic’s. "Until I learned that true value isn't something given to you by others. It is something you claim for yourself. Today, we open the doors of this foundation so that no woman who walks through them will ever feel small, worthless, or alone again."
The crowd erupted into resounding applause. Standing ovations echoed across the garden.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests mingled across the lawn, enjoying fresh food, live string music, and spring cocktails.
Dominic walked up to me on the terrace, carrying two glasses of sparkling water. He handed one to me, taking my hand in his and gently pulling me toward the secluded rose arbor at the edge of the lawn.
"You were incredible today, Clara," Dominic murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my temple.
"We were incredible," I corrected him, smiling as I leaned against his chest. "We built something real out of all that dark noise."
Dominic reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box.
My heart skipped a beat.
He opened the box. Inside sat a breathtaking vintage ring—not a diamond, but a brilliant, glowing emerald set in intricate silver filigree.
"This belonged to my grandmother," Dominic said softly, his voice trembling slightly with a rare, vulnerable emotion. "She wore it for fifty years through every storm her family faced. She used to tell me that emeralds represent rebirth, strength, and new beginnings."
He looked deeply into my eyes, dropping to one knee on the soft grass of the rose arbor.
"Clara Rossi," Dominic said, his dark eyes filled with absolute, unwavering love. "You reclaimed your life, you rebuilt your world, and you captured my heart. Will you do me the honor of standing beside me as my wife, my partner, and my equal forever?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in my eyes. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes, Dominic," I whispered, holding out my hand. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"
He slipped the emerald ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly. He stood up, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, lifting me off my feet as he kissed me deeply under the blooming roses and the warm spring sun.
