Chapter 7 - The Freeze

On Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., Robert received a swift lesson in legal reality.

Evelyn Reed executed a series of emergency court orders signed by a county family court judge.

When Robert tried to log into his private wealth accounts at 9:30 a.m. to transfer his funds offshore, he was greeted by a bright red system notification:

Account Access Restricted per Court Order #2026-CV-8891. Contact Legal Counsel.

When he tried to use his corporate credit cards at his lunch meeting, they were declined.

At 11:00 a.m., two court process servers arrived at his corporate office downtown. In front of his colleagues, his department head, and his junior staff, Robert was formally served with a petition for divorce, an emergency restraining order, a demand for forensic accounting, and a summons for a temporary support hearing.

By 2:00 p.m., my phone began ringing incessantly. Robert’s brother, Mark, called three times. His mother called twice. Robert left five voicemails, his voice shifting wildly from furious threats to weeping pleas.

I listened to the third voicemail in Evelyn Reed’s carpeted office downtown.

“Sarah… please, talk to me! The bank froze everything! I can’t even buy gas! My boss saw the process servers today! You’re ruining my career! Let’s sit down with a mediator… please, I’ll give you back the fifty thousand! Just lift the freeze!”

Evelyn smiled smoothly from behind her large mahogany desk, sipping her tea. “Notice how he only cares about the freeze when his own comfort is threatened? He didn't care when your daughter was doubled over in pain.”

“What happens next?” I asked.

“Next, we perform a full forensic audit,” Evelyn said, sliding a document across the desk for me to sign. “My team will uncover every dollar he has hidden over the last twelve years. Under state law, any asset hidden or fraudulently conveyed during a marriage can be awarded entirely to the innocent spouse as a penalty for marital fraud.”

She looked at me over her reading glasses. “Sarah, by the time I am finished with Robert Thorne, he will be paying child support, alimony, medical debt, and living on a budget tighter than anything he ever forced on you.”

A strange, light feeling bloomed in my chest. For twelve years, I had felt small, powerless, and dependent. But sitting in that chair, holding a pen, I realized I held all the power.
