Chapter 8 - The Reclamation

Three weeks passed.
Maya returned to school. Without the constant, terrifying pain in her belly and the toxic atmosphere of our old house, she blossomed.
Her appetite returned with a vengeance. She started kicking her soccer ball in Clara’s backyard again, her laughter echoing through the trees until the porch light came on. She resumed her photography, filling a new notebook with prints of spring flowers, bright blue skies, and portraits of Clara’s dog.
Meanwhile, Evelyn’s forensic accounting team worked like surgeons.
They uncovered an additional $110,000 Robert had hidden in an unregistered trust, alongside evidence that he had been underreporting his corporate bonuses to keep my temporary spousal allowance low.
The court was merciless.
At the preliminary hearing in May, Judge Patricia Vance reviewed the medical reports from Dr. Lawson and Dr. Vance, alongside the forensic financial report.
Judge Vance was a woman in her sixties with sharp blue eyes and zero tolerance for domestic manipulation. She looked at Robert, who sat at the defense table wearing a rumpled suit, looking thin, stressed, and defeated beside his court-appointed private attorney.
“Mr. Thorne,” Judge Vance’s voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls of the courtroom. “In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more egregious display of financial cruelty and parental neglect. You allowed your fifteen-year-old daughter to suffer a life-threatening medical crisis to protect a private fortune you illegally hid from your wife.”
Robert opened his mouth to speak, but his attorney frantically grabbed his arm, whispering for him to remain silent.
“Effective immediately,” Judge Vance ordered, bringing her wooden gavel down, “the court orders the immediate liquidation of Account #1 and Account #2 to restore the fifty thousand dollar inheritance to Mrs. Thorne, alongside full payment of all medical bills incurred at Riverside Medical Center.”
She turned her gaze to me, her expression softening into genuine respect.
“Furthermore, Mrs. Thorne is granted temporary exclusive possession of the marital home, temporary sole physical custody of Maya Thorne, and a monthly temporary support order of $6,500 pending final divorce trial.”

Robert sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands.
I stood beside Evelyn, holding my head high. I didn't feel vengeance. I didn't feel triumph. I simply felt the quiet, immovable strength of a mother who had fought for her child and won.
