Chapter 3 - The Snake’s Domain

The air in the room became heavy, thick with the scent of an ancient betrayal finally stepping out from the shadows.
“Uncle Richard...” I whispered, staring at the photograph in Alejandro’s hand. The paper rattled against my trembling fingers. “It was Richard?”
“Richard was the executor of your father’s estate,” Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble. “When your parents died in that suspicious house fire twenty years ago, and Elizabeth mysteriously 'vanished,' Richard inherited full administrative control over the entire Vance estate. He claimed Elizabeth had panicked and fled the country out of grief.”
“He tried to kill her,” I said, the horrific truth dawning on me. “He wanted the estate. My father owned sixty percent of Vance Global. Elizabeth owned thirty percent. If both of them were gone, and I was just a sixteen-year-old minor under his legal guardianship... Richard got everything!”
“He didn't just try to kill her,” Alejandro growled, looking over at Elizabeth, who had fallen into a light, exhausted sleep in the armchair, her head resting against the plush velvet. “He struck her, gave her brain damage, stripped her of her clothes and ID, and dumped her on the streets like trash in a city two hundred miles away, hoping the elements or violence would finish the job for him.”
I stood up, pure, unadulterated fury washing over the grief that had consumed me for hours. “We’re calling the police. We’re calling the FBI right now. I want him arrested!”
“No,” Alejandro said sharply, grabbing my shoulders to steady me. “Mariana, look at me. Listen to me very carefully.”
“He stole her life, Alejandro! He stole twenty years of my aunt’s existence!”
“And he is currently one of the most powerful corporate figures in the Midwest!” Alejandro countered, his eyes locked onto mine with fierce intensity. “Richard Vance controls police boards, judges, and high-priced legal teams. If we walk into a precinct right now with a homeless woman who suffers from amnesia and claims she’s a dead heiress, Richard’s lawyers will have her committed to a psych ward before the sun comes up. They will claim we are manipulating a vulnerable woman to launch a corporate hostile takeover.”
I bit my lip, forcing myself to swallow the rage boiling in my chest. Alejandro was right. Richard was a predator who had spent two decades solidifying his fortress. A surprise legal attack without ironclad proof would only give him time to destroy evidence—or worse, eliminate Elizabeth permanently.
“So what do we do?” I asked, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. “We just sit here and let him attend charity galas while my aunt recovers from twenty years on the pavement?”
Alejandro smiled, but there was no warmth in it. It was the terrifying, predatory smile of a man who had built an empire by outsmarting every wolf in the business world.
“We don't attack him in a courtroom, Mariana,” Alejandro murmured, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “We trap him in his own kingdom. Tomorrow night is the Annual Vance Global Charity Gala at the Drake Hotel. Richard is celebrating his twentieth anniversary as CEO.”
I looked at my husband, understanding dawning in my mind. “You want to take her there.”
“I want to walk into that ballroom with the woman he tried to erase,” Alejandro whispered, his eyes gleaming with cold retribution. “I want him to look into her green eyes in front of three hundred shareholders, five news networks, and the entire city elite.”
Before I could answer, the home phone on the nightstand began to ring.
Alejandro walked over and picked it up on the second ring. “Hello?”
He went dead silent. His posture straightened instantly.
“Alejandro, my boy!” a loud, booming, jovial voice echoed through the earpiece—a voice I recognized instantly. It was Uncle Richard. “I tried reaching Mariana on her cell, but she isn't answering. Is everything alright over there? I heard a rumor from one of my contacts in the city zoning office that your construction crews were pulled off the downtown site early today.”
Alejandro looked at me, holding the phone slightly away from his ear so I could hear.
“Everything is fine, Richard,” Alejandro replied smoothly, his tone entirely relaxed and polite. “Mariana and I just had a private family matter to attend to at home.”
“Ah, good, good!” Richard laughed hearty, deceptive laughter. “Well, I’m calling to make sure you two haven't forgotten about tomorrow night. The board is presenting me with a lifetime achievement award, and I want my favorite niece and her brilliant husband in the front row. Family comes first, after all!”
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as Richard uttered the word family.
“We wouldn't miss it for the world, Richard,” Alejandro said, his eyes burning into mine. “In fact, we’re bringing a very special guest with us. Someone you haven't seen in a very long time.”
There was a micro-second pause on the line. The hearty laughter stopped.
“Oh?” Richard asked, his voice dropping an octave, a subtle razor-sharp edge creeping into his tone. “And who might that be?”
May you like
“Just an old friend of the family,” Alejandro replied sweetly. “We’ll see you tomorrow night, Richard. Have a good evening.”
Alejandro hung up the phone without waiting for a reply.
