Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a spectacle of blinding luxury.
Crystal chandeliers cast warm, glittering light over three hundred guests dressed in black-tie attire. Champagne flowed from ice towers, classical string quartets played softly in the balcony, and news cameras from major business outlets flashed continuously near the red carpet entrance.
Banner signs displaying Richard Vance’s face hung from the velvet-draped walls: VANCE GLOBAL HOLDINGS: 20 YEARS OF VISIONARY LEADERSHIP.
Alejandro, Elizabeth, and I arrived through a private side entrance secured by Alejandro’s personal security team. Elizabeth wore a heavy black cashmere cloak over her emerald gown, the hood pulled slightly forward to obscure her face as we moved through the marble corridors toward the ballroom doors.
“Remember,” Alejandro whispered into my ear as we stood near the rear entrance of the crowded room. “Richard is scheduled to give his keynote speech in ten minutes. The board members are sitting at the main head table right below the stage.”
I looked around the room. Sitting at Table One was the city elite—judges, corporate directors, political figures, and district attorneys—all sipping expensive wine, celebrating the philanthropist CEO who had built his fortune on the bones of his family.
And there, standing near the mahogany podium on the raised stage, was Uncle Richard.
He was sixty-two years old now, impeccably groomed in a tailor-made tuxedo, his silver hair neatly slicked back. He was holding a glass of scotch, laughing with the Mayor of Chicago, waving charismatically at the photographer flashes. On his right pinky finger, catching the glare of the chandeliers, sat the thick silver ring with the red serpent.
I felt Elizabeth tremble violently beside me under her cloak.
“Easy,” I whispered, taking her arm, feeling her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. “Easy, Aunt Elizabeth. I’m right here.”
“He... he pushed me,” Elizabeth gasped quietly, her green eyes locked onto Richard’s face. “In the rain... by the car... he told the driver to throw me in the river... but the driver... the driver took my gold watch and left me in the alley instead...”
My eyes widened. The driver! The man Richard had paid to dispose of her twenty years ago hadn't killed her—he had robbed her and abandoned her, leaving her to wander with a fractured skull!
Suddenly, the lights in the ballroom dimmed.
A spotlight hit the podium. The Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, smiling broadly at the applauding crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, and members of the board,” the announcer’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system. “Tonight, we honor two decades of unparalleled growth, philanthropy, and corporate excellence. Please raise your glasses for the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Vance Global Holdings... Mr. Richard Vance!”
The room erupted into deafening applause.
Richard stepped up to the podium, placing his hands on the wooden edges, bowing modestly to the audience, projecting the picture-perfect image of a benevolent patriarch.
“Thank you! Thank you, everyone!” Richard began, his voice smooth, warm, and utterly convincing. “Twenty years ago, when a horrific tragedy took my beloved brother and his wife from this world... I swore an oath. I swore I would preserve their legacy. I swore I would build a company that would make them proud from heaven.”
I felt a surge of cold, fiery hatred so violent I nearly vomited right there on the carpet.
“I have carried that burden with pride,” Richard continued, wiping a fake tear from his eye. “And I know that somewhere tonight, my dear brother, his wife, and my lost sister Elizabeth are looking down on us...”
“That’s enough,” Alejandro whispered darkly.
Alejandro raised his hand, making a swift gesture toward the lighting control booth at the back of the room.
Two seconds later, the main audio feed cut out with a loud, metallic screech.
The microphone went completely dead.
Richard frowned, tapping the microphone with his finger. “Is this on? Hello?”
Before the AV technicians could figure out what was happening, the massive projection screens behind the stage—which were supposed to show a video tribute of Richard’s corporate achievements—suddenly flickered.
The screens went black.
Then, a massive, high-definition photograph filled every screen in the room.
It was the official lab document from Dr. Thorne’s clinic: DNA CONCORDANCE REPORT: 99.9% MATCH - ELIZABETH VANCE.
A confused murmur swept through the three hundred guests. Richard turned around to look at the screen, his face instantly draining of every drop of color.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Richard shouted off-mic, glaring toward the tech booth. “Turn those screens off!”

Then, Alejandro’s deep, powerful voice echoed across the quiet ballroom, amplified by a wireless lapel microphone.
“Don't turn them off, Richard,” Alejandro said, stepping out from the rear shadows into the center aisle of the ballroom. “The show is just getting started.”
