Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Door

By 2:00 AM, Julian had arrived. He sat at my kitchen table, reviewing the documents I had recovered from the backpack.

"The petition is legally weak, but with our father’s influence in the Austin judicial circuit, it could still be granted on an emergency, ex-parte basis," Julian analyzed, rubbing his temples. "An ex-parte order means a judge could sign it without you even being present in court, giving Rebecca temporary custody of Lily for up to thirty days while an investigation is conducted. In those thirty days, they will keep Lily away from you, alienate her, and use Dr. Thorne to cement their case."

"We can't let that happen," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs. "If they take Lily, even for a day, it will break her. She’s already so fragile."

Suddenly, the headlights of a car swept across the living room window.

A heavy, authoritative knock echoed through the quiet house.

Julian and I exchanged a look. I stood up, but Julian held up a hand, signaling for me to stay back. He walked to the front door, looking through the peephole before unlocking it.

My father, Robert Vance, stood on the porch. Even at two in the morning, he looked impeccable in a tailored suit, though his tie was slightly loosened. His eyes, cold and calculating, swept past Julian to find me standing in the hallway.

"Robert," Julian said, his voice devoid of any familial warmth. "You're a long way from West Lake."

"Step aside, Julian," my father said, his voice carrying the deep, booming authority of a federal judge. "This is a family matter. I came to speak to Daniel."

"I am Daniel’s attorney," Julian replied, stepping forward to block the doorway. "Anything you have to say to him goes through me."

My father let out a cold, patronizing laugh. "An attorney? Don't play games, Julian. I am your father, and I am a judge in this county. I know exactly what legal maneuvers you are planning. Daniel, listen to me." He looked past Julian, his eyes locking onto mine. "You are emotional. You’ve been grieving Claire for two years, and it has clouded your judgment. You brought a frivolous medical report to our attention. Rebecca was only trying to discipline a child who was out of control."

"She slapped my daughter, Dad!" I yelled, stepping forward, my anger boiling over. "She left bruises on her arms! Lily is five years old!"

"And Lily is a highly unstable child!" Robert snapped back, his judicial mask slipping to reveal the ruthless patriarch beneath. "She needs professional help that you cannot provide on your salary. We have arranged for her to go to a specialized private facility in Dallas. It’s for her own good, Daniel. If you cooperate, we can handle this quietly. If you fight us, I will personally ensure that your forensic accounting license is reviewed for emotional instability. I will ruin your career, and I will take Lily anyway."

The sheer arrogance of his threat made the room feel incredibly cold. He wasn't just a grandfather; he was a tyrant who used the law as a personal hammer to crush anyone who disobeyed him.

"Are you threatening my client, Judge Vance?" Julian asked, his voice deadly quiet. He pulled out his phone, showing that it was actively recording the conversation. "Because in the state of Texas, coercion and extortion by a judicial officer are felony offenses. I’d love to present this recording to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct."

My father’s eyes narrowed, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of red. He looked at the phone, then at me.

"You think you’re clever, Julian," Robert whispered, his voice trembling with fury. "But you underestimate the depth of this family's influence. You have until Monday morning to hand Lily over to Rebecca. If you don't, the court order will be delivered by the sheriff's department."

He turned on his heel and walked back to his black sedan, leaving the echo of his threat hanging in the damp night air.
