Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The turning point of the hearing came when Julian called Dr. Aris Thorne to the stand.

Dr. Thorne, a nervous-looking man with a sweating brow, had been subpoenaed with all his clinical records. Under the intense, unforgiving questioning of Julian and the stern gaze of the federal judge, Thorne’s composure shattered within minutes.

"Dr. Thorne," Julian said, leaning against the podium. "According to your official evaluation, you spent ten hours observing Lily Vance before concluding she was emotionally unstable. Is that correct?"

"Yes, that is correct," Thorne stammered, adjusting his glasses.

"Then can you explain why the cell phone tower records of your mobile device show that you were in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on the three days you claimed to be evaluating Lily in Austin?"

Thorne’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He looked at my father’s attorney, but the attorney looked away, knowing there was no saving him.

"I... I may have delegated some of the observation to an assistant," Thorne whispered.

"You didn't delegate anything, Dr. Thorne," Julian said, his voice rising with authority. "We have the bank records. You received a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars from a private account belonging to Linda Vance on the exact day you signed this fraudulent evaluation. You fabricated this entire report to help this family steal a child, didn't you?"

"I... I want my lawyer," Thorne whispered, his face completely drained of color.

"You’re going to need one, Dr. Thorne," Judge Helena said, her voice dripping with disgust. "And so will several other people in this room."

The judge turned her attention to my father, Robert Vance.

"Judge Vance, I am referring these financial records and the evidence of judicial bribery directly to the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Judge Helena announced, her voice echoing like a death knell through the silent courtroom. "Your tenure on the bench is effectively over. As for the state custody petition, it is hereby dismissed with prejudice. A permanent protective order is granted, prohibiting Rebecca Miller, Marcus Miller, Linda Vance, and Robert Vance from coming within one thousand yards of Lily Vance or her father, Daniel."

My mother let out a loud sob, burying her face in her hands.

My father sat frozen, his eyes hollow as he realized the empire of influence he had spent forty years building had collapsed in a single morning.

Rebecca looked at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, animalistic hatred. "You destroyed this family, Daniel! You ruined us over a spoiled brat!"

May you like

I stood up from the witness stand, looking down at her with nothing but pity.

"No, Rebecca," I said quietly. "You destroyed this family the moment you laid a hand on my daughter."
