Chapter 10 - The Almond Pastries

One year later.
The sun shone brightly over the wooden deck of our coastal home. A light breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees surrounding the garden, and the sound of waves crashing gently in the distance filled the morning air.
Claire sat in a comfortable armchair on the deck, wearing a floral summer dress. Maya, now a year old, was happily crawling across a soft wool blanket on the floor, giggling as she reached for a wooden toy train.
I stepped out onto the deck carrying a breakfast tray. On it were two cups of fresh coffee, a small jar of ginger candies, and a box of warm, fresh almond pastries from the local bakery down the street.
"You brought pastries?" Claire smiled, her eyes lighting up as I set the tray on the small table beside her.
"Fresh from the oven," I said, sitting beside her and taking her hand. "I made a promise a year ago to bring you breakfast, and I plan on keeping it."
Claire leaned over and kissed my cheek softly. "You’ve kept every promise, Julian."
I looked down at Maya, who had managed to pull herself up against my knee, looking at me with large, bright eyes full of wonder and complete safety.
There were no iron gates here. No dark family secrets, no forged wills, no cruel laughter echoing in cold stone foyers.
The heavy estate of my past had fallen away, leaving only the life, the love, and the family we had chosen to build for ourselves.

I picked up a pastry, broke off a piece for Claire, and smiled as the morning sun warmed the deck.
We were finally home.
