Chapter 8 - The Showdown in the Boardroom

Friday morning, 9:00 AM.

The top floor of the Vance Logistics tower in downtown Columbus was wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, overlooking the river. The twelve members of the board of directors sat around the polished mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Marcus and Eleanor. Despite being evicted from the estate the day before, Eleanor had put on her finest pearl necklace and black suit, trying desperately to project power. Marcus sat beside her, nervously chewing his thumbnail.

"Item one on the agenda," Eleanor announced, slamming her gavel down. "The immediate removal of Julian Vance as Chief Executive Officer due to breach of fiduciary duty and family misconduct."

"Seconded," Marcus chimed in quickly.

"Before we take a vote," a calm voice rang out from the back of the room.

The heavy oak doors swung open. I walked into the boardroom, flanked by David Sterling and two representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves.

"Julian!" Eleanor snapped, rising from her chair. "You have no standing to speak here! You are suspended pending investigation!"

"Actually, Eleanor," Sterling said, stepping forward and dropping a legal stack of documents onto the center of the table. "Julian is the holder of seventy-five percent of the voting shares of Vance Logistics, effective as of eight o'clock this morning."

Marcus stood up, his face white. "That’s impossible! Father’s proxy shares were divided equally!"

"Your father’s forged proxy shares were," Sterling corrected smoothly. "The federal banking authority verified the true vault documents yesterday. The forged signatures executed by you and your mother have been officially invalidated."

One of the SEC officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

"Marcus Vance? You are under arrest for grand larceny, securities fraud, and illegal diversion of corporate assets."

"What?!" Marcus gasped, backing away toward the windows. "No! Mother, do something!"

Eleanor reached out to grab her son’s arm, but her hands were shaking so violently she dropped her glass of water, spilling it across the mahogany table. "Julian... stop this! He’s your brother!"

"He’s a criminal," I said, staring directly at Marcus as the officers pulled his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs into place. "And you aided him."

"Julian! Please!" Marcus yelled as he was hauled toward the exit, his dignity entirely shattered. "Don't let them do this! Julian!"

The boardroom was dead silent except for the clicking of Marcus's shoes fading down the carpeted hallway.

I turned to the board of directors, who sat frozen in shock.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I said calmly, walking to the head of the table and taking my seat. "Let’s begin today’s meeting. Item one: restructuring the company."
