Chapter 6 - The Public Reckoning

The plaza outside Chicago City Hall was packed with news cameras, journalists, and curious onlookers by 9:45 AM. The morning light bounced off the glass skyscrapers, casting sharp shadows across the crowd.
Patricia Carter stood behind a podium that her PR team had hastily erected on the steps. She was dressed in an expensive white wool coat, holding her head high, flanked by Ethan and two high-priced defense attorneys. She looked like a woman who believed she was about to reclaim her throne.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Patricia began, her voice echoing through the microphones. "It brings me great sorrow to address you today regarding the tragic mismanagement of one of Chicago’s premier institutions, the Bennett Grand Hotel. Due to inexperienced leadership, the hotel has suffered severe health code violations and operational failures that threaten the safety of our city's guests..."
She paused, dramatic as ever, looking directly into the primary camera. "As a concerned business leader and family member, my company, Carter Global Development, has officially petitioned the courts today for an emergency stewardship to preserve—"
"Are you referring to these health code violations, Mrs. Carter?"
A clear, confident voice cut through the crowd.
The reporters turned in unison as I stepped out from a black limousine parked at the curb. I was accompanied by Marcus Sterling, Victoria Vance, and the Chief Inspector of the Department of Public Health himself.
Patricia’s speech faltered. "Madison? What is the meaning of this intrusion?"
I walked up the steps, holding a pristine document bearing the seal of the City of Chicago.
"The health inspection conducted yesterday was cleared with an A-plus rating," Chief Inspector Roberts announced into the microphones, stepping in front of Patricia. "Furthermore, an ongoing investigation by the Police Department has revealed that the alleged violations were fraudulent attempts at corporate sabotage."
A murmur rippled through the crowd of reporters. Cameras began flashing rapidly.
"That... that is absurd!" Patricia stammered, her composure cracking. "This girl is using her family’s influence to cover up—"
"We have the confession on video, Mrs. Carter," Marcus Sterling interrupted, lifting a tablet that displayed Richard Hayes sitting in a police interrogation room, detailing every payment made to him by Patricia’s shell company. "Along with bank transfer receipts signed directly by your corporate treasurer."
Ethan gasped, backing away from his mother as if she had suddenly caught fire. "Mom... what did you do?"
"Shut up, Ethan!" Patricia snapped, her face twisting with rage as she realized she was being cornered in front of every major news network in the city.
"And as for your financial standing to claim stewardship over any business," I said, stepping up to the podium and looking Patricia straight in the eye, "the Bennett Holding Trust has officially filed foreclosure papers against Carter Global Development as of 9:00 AM this morning. You are bankrupt, Patricia."
"You little viper!" Patricia shrieked, losing all sense of decorum and lunging toward me.
Before she could even reach me, two plainclothes detectives stepped in, intercepting her and placing her under arrest for commercial bribery, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy.
The flashbulbs were blinding. Reporters were shouting questions, surging forward as Patricia was handcuffed and led down the steps toward a waiting police cruiser, her designer coat disheveled, her mask of nobility completely shattered.
Ethan stood frozen on the steps, abandoned, looking at the cameras, then at his mother being put into the police car, and finally at me.
He took a slow, trembling step toward me. "Madison... Maddy, please... I didn't know she went that far! You have to believe me! I was just trying to save our future!"
May you like
"There is no 'our', Ethan," I said, my voice quiet enough for only him to hear amidst the media chaos. "You traded your integrity for your mother’s approval and easy money. Now you have neither."
I turned my back on him and walked down the steps, surrounded by my team, leaving him completely alone in the blinding light of the media frenzy.
