Chapter 9 - The Grand Gala

A year after that fateful twenty-seventh birthday dinner, the Bennett River Suites officially celebrated its grand opening.

It was the premier event of the Chicago social calendar. The grand ballroom was filled with international dignitaries, business leaders, media moguls, and cultural icons. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered breathtaking views of the river lit up beneath the nighttime sky, and soft jazz music floated through the room.

I stood near the main entrance, wearing an emerald green silk gown, conversing with the mayor and several international hotel investors. I was no longer the quiet, timid girl who sat silently through uncomfortable family dinners. I was a respected business leader in my own right, confident in my speech, grounded in my authority.

As the evening progressed, Victoria Vance walked over, raising a glass of champagne. "A toast to the CEO of the Year," she smiled. "The hotel is at 100% occupancy for the next six months, and our stock value has increased by forty percent."

"To teamwork," I grinned, clinking my glass against hers. "I couldn't have done this without you and Marcus."

"You did the heavy lifting, Madison," Victoria said warmly. "By the way... there’s someone who has been waiting all evening for a moment to speak with you."

She gestured subtly toward the grand staircase.

Standing near the base of the stairs was a man in a sharp tuxedo, engaged in conversation with several board members. It was Lucas Sterling—Marcus Sterling’s younger brother and the Chief Legal Officer for our international expansion team.

Over the past six months, Lucas and I had worked closely together on our European expansion projects. Unlike Ethan, Lucas was a man of quiet integrity, remarkable intellect, and genuine kindness. He listened to my ideas, respected my decisions, and had never once tried to shrink my presence. Over dozens of late-night work sessions and shared victories, a deep, respectful affection had grown between us.

Lucas excused himself from the board members and walked over to me, a warm smile on his face.

"You look breathtaking tonight, Madison," he said softly, his dark eyes meeting mine.

"Thank you, Lucas," I replied, feeling a familiar, comfortable warmth in my chest. "And thank you for everything you did to make this opening run smoothly."

"It’s easy to work hard when you believe in the leader," he said, stepping slightly closer. "The board just approved the London project, by the way. We officially go international next month."

"That's incredible news!" I smiled.

"Which means," Lucas continued, his tone turning gentle and personal, "I might have to spend a lot of time in London over the next year. Unless, of course... my CEO needs me here."

I looked into his eyes and saw something I had never seen in Ethan’s: genuine respect, unwavering loyalty, and an invitation to build a future together as equals.

"I think my Chief Legal Officer belongs wherever I am," I said with a soft smile.

Lucas beamed, offering his hand. "Then I’m right where I need to be. May I have this dance, Executive Chairwoman?"

"It would be my pleasure," I said, placing my hand in his.
