Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 6: THE BOARDROOM AMBUSH

Three days later, the glass and steel skyscraper housing the headquarters of Whitmore Maritime stood tall against the grey Boston skyline.

At 10:00 a.m., the executive board of directors gathered on the forty-second floor for their quarterly meeting.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Marcus Vance—a silver-haired man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive bespoke suit, holding a gold pen.

"Where is Margaret?" Marcus asked, checking his Rolex watch with an annoyed expression. "She insisted on calling this emergency session, but she’s fifteen minutes late."

"She’s right here, Marcus," a voice echoed from the double doors.

The doors opened wide. Grandma Margaret walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored black dress and her signature gold chain.

Beside her walked Richard Vance, carrying a leather dossier.

And right behind them walked me, holding nine-month-old Lily in my arms, wearing a sharp navy blue business suit, my dark hair styled neatly, holding my head high.

Marcus leaned back in his chair, a patronizing smile touching his lips. "Margaret... and little Claire. What a surprise. But this is an executive board meeting, Margaret. Family members who aren't shareholders aren't permitted in the boardroom."

"Claire is a shareholder, Marcus," Grandma Margaret said smoothly, taking her seat at the head of the table. "In fact, as of nine o'clock this morning, Claire controls thirty-five percent of the voting stock of Whitmore Maritime—the shares previously held in trust by her late father."

The other six board members looked at each other in shock, murmuring quietly.

Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his composure. "Be that as it may, Margaret, bring a infant into a corporate restructuring meeting is hardly professional—"

"What isn't professional, Marcus," I interrupted, stepping forward and setting a thick stack of audited documents onto the center of the table, "is stealing three hundred thousand dollars a year from the Atlantic shipping routes to cover your offshore gambling debts in Aruba."

The room plunged into dead silence.

Marcus turned pale. "What did you say?"

"I said," I repeated, my voice clear and unwavering, resounding through the high-ceilinged room, "that you collaborated with Patricia Whitmore in Denver to drain my inheritance while using fake invoices to cover your embezzlement from Whitmore Maritime."

Richard Vance opened his briefcase and pulled out a tablet, connecting it to the boardroom’s massive digital display screen.

"These are the wire transfers signed by Marcus Vance over the last three years," Richard announced to the board. "Every transfer corresponds to an illegal payout from 'Aura Properties' in Denver. And this is the audio recording recovered from Evan Vance’s personal effects."

Richard hit play.

Evan’s voice filled the boardroom, explicitly laying out Marcus’s conversation with Patricia about hiding the stolen two million dollars before Grandma Margaret's Thanksgiving visit.

Marcus slammed his hands onto the table, standing up so fast his chair rolled back into the wall. "This is a setup! That recording is fabricated! You can't prove any of this!"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation seems to think we can," Grandma Margaret said calmly, pointing toward the boardroom doors.

Two FBI agents dressed in dark suits stepped into the room, holding an official warrant.

"Marcus Vance," the lead agent said. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, money laundering, and interstate wire fraud."
