Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 7: THE UNRAVELING
As the FBI agents cuffed Marcus Vance and led him past his speechless colleagues, the boardroom erupted into frantic chatter.
Grandma Margaret raised her hand, restoring quiet instantly.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Grandma announced, her voice filled with absolute authority. "For ten years, I allowed members of this family to manage this company while I retreated into grief. That mistake ends today."
She turned to face me.
"As majority owner of Whitmore Maritime, I am nominating Claire Whitmore as the new Vice-President of Internal Operations and Chief Oversight Director."
One of the senior board members, an elderly gentleman named Mr. Aris, stood up and smiled warmly. "Given that Mrs. Vance’s husband gave his life to expose the corruption in this firm, I second the nomination with absolute honor."
"All in favor?" Grandma asked.
Every hand at the table went up.
After the meeting ended and the board members left the room, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over Boston Harbor. Ships glided across the icy water, carrying cargo across the world.
Grandma walked up beside me, taking sleeping Lily from my arms so I could rest my tired shoulders.
"You did wonderfully, Claire," Grandma said softly.
"I was terrified," I admitted, looking at my reflection in the glass. "Twenty minutes ago, I was worried I would say the wrong legal term or stutter."
"You didn't stutter once," Grandma smiled. "Your father would have been so proud of you today. And Evan... Evan’s courage was not in vain."
My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket. It was a text message from Detective Miller in Denver:

“Claire, Patricia has just accepted a plea deal. She has agreed to turn over all remaining offshore assets and testify against Marcus Vance in federal court to avoid a life sentence for murder conspiracy. The court has granted full financial restitution to you.”
I let out a long, shuddering breath. The nightmare that had started on a snowy highway fourteen months ago was finally reaching its end.
