CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE IN SEAT 2A

Halfway through the flight, I delivered their meals.
Ryan avoided my eyes.
Ashley didn’t.
She watched me carefully now.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Recalculating.
That’s what betrayal does when it meets consequences—it stops being emotional and becomes mathematical.
As I leaned forward, I placed something else on Ryan’s tray.
A sealed envelope.
He froze.
“What is this?” he whispered.
I met his eyes for the first time without a smile.
“Open it when you’re done eating,” I said.
Then I walked away.
Behind me, I heard the faint tear of paper.
Silence followed.
Too long.
Then:
“Ryan… what is this?” Ashley asked.
His voice changed when he answered.
Smaller.
“What the hell…”
Inside the envelope was not drama.
Not anger.
Just documentation.
Joint accounts.
Vacation bookings.
Hotel reservations.
Photographs.
All cross-referenced.
All dated.
All quietly collected over months I never told him I noticed.
