CHAPTER 5 — DESCENT INTO CANCUN

The cabin lights dimmed.
Approach to landing.
That thin, golden hour where people start pretending they are new versions of themselves.
Ryan stood up before we landed.
He shouldn’t have.
He knew better.
But panic makes people forget rules.
“Valerie,” he said sharply, grabbing my wrist as I passed. “We need to fix this before we land.”
I looked down at his hand.
Then at him.
“Fix what?” I asked calmly.
“This misunderstanding.”
Ashley stood behind him now, silent.
Waiting.
Watching.
I leaned closer.
And spoke quietly enough that only he could hear.
“There is no misunderstanding.”
A pause.
Then:
“You told her you were free.”
His grip loosened slightly.
May you like
“And I let you.”
The plane touched down.
