Chapter 4 - Landing in Paradise

Flight 1482 from Atlanta to Key West touched down on the tarmac at Key West International Airport at 4:45 PM.

Inside the first-class cabin, David Carter stretched his arms, feeling the warm Florida sunlight streaming through the oval window. Beside him, Theresa was reapplying her pink lipstick, admiring her reflection in a gold-plated compact mirror.

"That was a delightfully quiet flight," Theresa said, clicking her compact shut and adjusting her linen scarf. "I told you, David. Once you remove yourself from toxic, dramatic energy, your spirit instantly lifts."

"I just hope Valerie didn't make a scene with the neighbors," David murmured, though there was zero genuine concern in his tone. He pulled his phone out of airplane mode, waiting for the cellular signal to catch. "She was acting completely unhinged this morning. Claiming Ethan wasn't breathing... I mean, the kid was just sleeping."

"She’s looking for attention," Theresa sneered, slipping my stolen credit card back into her designer handbag. "She thinks because she was some high-powered analyst in Seattle that she knows more than a mother who raised four boys. When we get back on Tuesday, we’ll talk to Dr. Evans about having her placed in a temporary psychiatric hold for forty-eight hours. It’ll be good for her. Give her time to... recalibrate."

David’s phone chimed as it connected to the local tower.

Instantly, a deluge of notifications flooded his screen. Dozens of missed calls. Hundreds of text messages. Alerts from his bank, his smart-home security system, and his corporate email.

"What the hell?" David muttered, scrolling through the screen. "My home security account... it says all camera feeds were downloaded and the storage drive was wiped."

"It's Valerie," Theresa dismissed it with a wave of her manicured hand. "She’s throwing a tantrum because she can't call us. Ignore it."

"No, Mom, look," David held up his phone. A text message from his lead logistics manager at Carter Logistics read: DAVID WHERE ARE YOU? THE FBI AND IRS ARE AT THE OFFICE WITH A FEDERAL SEARCH WARRANT. THEY HAVE FROZEN ALL ACCOUNTS.

David’s face lost every drop of color. "Mom... the FBI is at the office."

Theresa froze, her lipstick dropping onto her lap. "What? That’s impossible! How could—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the airplane came to a sudden halt on the taxiway, far from the main terminal jet bridge.

The cabin doors hissed open. The standard flight attendants stepped aside, their expressions pale and tense, as four uniformed officers from the Key West Police Department, accompanied by two sharp-suited special agents from the FBI, stepped onto the aircraft.

The lead agent, a tall woman with a gold badge pinned to her belt, held a piece of paper.

"David Carter? Theresa Carter?" the agent's voice echoed through the silent first-class cabin.

David stumbled out of his seat, his hands trembling. "Yes? I’m David Carter. What is the meaning of this? I’m a business owner on vacation—"

"David Carter, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the District Court of Oregon for felony wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," the agent announced loudly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt.

"What?!" Theresa shrieked, standing up and shoving her handbag into her seat. "This is a outrageous misunderstanding! My daughter-in-law is mentally ill! She’s framing us!"

"Theresa Carter," the second agent stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back with swift, practiced efficiency. "You are also under arrest for federal financial crimes, as well as an outstanding state warrant from Oregon for felony child endangerment, criminal mistreatment of a dependent, and grand larceny."

"Child endangerment?!" Theresa screamed as the cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists, cutting into her skin. "I didn't do anything to that brat! He was fine!"

The passengers in first class gasped, pulling out their phones to record the spectacle as Theresa Carter was dragged down the aisle, her designer scarf caught on a headrest, her hair wild, screaming curses at the top of her lungs.

As David was pushed down the air stairs toward a waiting police cruiser on the hot tarmac, his phone rang in the agent’s pocket.

The agent pulled out the phone, looked at the screen, and held it to David’s ear. "It’s your wife. You have ten seconds."

David pressed his face against the speaker, his voice cracking with hysterical panic. "Valerie! Valerie, what did you do?! Tell these agents it’s a mistake! My mother and I are in handcuffs!"

Across the country, sitting in a quiet, sunlit NICU room while holding her healthy, breathing son against her breast, Valerie spoke into the phone.

May you like

Her voice was as cold, smooth, and absolute as deep ocean ice.

"Hello, David," I said. "Welcome to Florida. I hope you enjoy the stay. It's going to last about twenty-five years."
