Chapter 8 - The Fall of Theresa

While David was crumbling under the weight of his own cowardice, his mother was attempting to play a far more dangerous game.
Theresa Carter had hired one of Portland’s most expensive criminal defense attorneys—a man named Richard Vance (no relation to the doctor), who was notorious for technicality dismissals.
At the preliminary bail hearing three days later, Richard Vance stood before Federal Judge Margaret Stone, attempting to portray Theresa as a devoted grandmother who was being victimized by an vengeful, postpartum daughter-in-law.
"Your Honor," Attorney Vance argued, spreading his hands dramatically toward the bench. "My client is a respectable businesswoman and community member. The allegations made by Mrs. Valerie Carter are the product of severe postpartum psychosis and marital resentment. Mrs. Valerie Carter has orchestrated a smear campaign to hijack my client's company and destroy her family!"
Judge Stone, a formidable woman in her sixties with grey hair and sharp eyes, looked down from the bench. "Attorney Vance, the court has reviewed the preliminary evidence submitted by the prosecution. Do you have a response to the Nest security footage?"
"The footage is unauthenticated and selectively edited, Your Honor!" Vance claimed confidently.
From the prosecution table, the Assistant U.S. Attorney, accompanied by Marcus and me, stood up.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor announced, "we would like to call our chief forensic evidence expert to authenticate the digital metadata."
I walked up to the witness stand, wearing a dark gray pantsuit, carrying my secure forensic tablet. I took the oath, swore to tell the truth, and sat down in the witness chair.
For the next forty-five minutes, I dismantled Theresa’s defense piece by piece.
I demonstrated to the court the cryptographic hash values embedded in the original video files, proving they had been uploaded automatically to an immutable cloud server in real-time on the morning of the incident, making any editing or tampering physically impossible.
Then, I opened the forensic financial analysis I had prepared.
I projected onto the courtroom monitors the complete paper trail of Sun Coast Investments LLC. I showed the court step-by-step how Theresa had used an IP address originating from her personal laptop inside my house to forge my digital signature, move three point two million dollars out of her employees' retirement accounts, and purchase luxury real estate in Florida.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," I testified, looking directly into Theresa’s terrified eyes across the room, "we recovered deleted text messages from Theresa Carter’s phone, retrieved via cloud backup at the time of her arrest. On the morning of the incident, ten minutes before leaving for the airport, Theresa sent a text to her son David that reads, quote: 'Once we land in Florida, we’ll report her missing and crazy. The baby will be ours by next month.'"
A collective gasp echoed through the crowded courtroom.
Theresa’s attorney went completely silent, his papers dropping onto his desk.
Theresa jumped out of her seat, her face twisted in a mask of pure, demonic rage. "You lying, ungrateful little bitch!" she shrieked, clawing at her attorney’s arm. "I gave you a home! I let you marry my son! You were supposed to be nothing!"
Judge Stone slammed her heavy wooden gavel down three times, the loud THUD ringing through the courtroom.
"Order in the court!" Judge Stone barked. "Defendant will be seated immediately!"
Theresa was forced back into her chair by two court marshals.
Judge Stone looked down at Theresa with deep, unfiltered disgust.
"Bail is denied," Judge Stone declared firmly. "The defendant will remain in federal custody pending trial. This court finds overwhelming evidence of severe flight risk, financial corruption, and dangerous sociopathic behavior toward an infant."

As the marshals clamped heavy leg irons around Theresa’s ankles, she turned toward me, tears of pure hatred streaming down her withered face.
I didn't flinch. I simply picked up my tablet, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom, and stepped out into the bright sunlight where Marcus was waiting with my baby.
